20K Budget on a brand new car.

We bought a new SEAT Leon 1.2 TSI SE back in September for my girlfriends commute. This included sat-nav and the LED light pack.

You could get one of these, under budget, built great and does around 50MPG urban.

Why must it be new OP? And don't say you're fully aware of depreciation. I'm sure you are.

Do you have the cash, or are buying the car on finance? I can appreciate some merit in buying new if you don't have the entire cash value sat in your bank, as the finance rates on new will typically be much better than bank rates (or indeed dealer used rates).

Not really, Santander will loan @ 4.5%... any dealer offering less than this on a new car is likely using the margin you could have haggled off in order to fund it..

If you are fixed to a budget it would be very daft not to see what opening up to nearly-new could do for you.

That same logic applies to everyone who buys a new car.

My last 2 cars have been new and my next car will also be new.

Matter of preference. I just love that new car smell...

Having thought about it, 20k on a brand new car doesn't really get you anything very interesting. I'd probably be looking at saving a few more K and getting a mint used XF or 5 series.

Yeah, 4.5% if you can get it. Not everyone will - however not knowing the OP's financial credibility it's hard to distinguish.

The point is, generally, new car finance is competitive.

edit; just checked Santander and £15k or more is 6.9%. Ford are offering 4.2% on the Fiesta ST, and Toyota 4.9% on the GT86.

20k is more than enough for a decent new car if your main objectives are not based on performance or prestige.

Yes, I could stretch the budget to 30k but that is 10k more than I want to spend.

So if your objectives aren't performance or prestige then what are they? To me a least, 20k is a large chunk of money, and if I wasn't bothered about performance or prestige I'd be spending 8-10k on a Focus or Ceed or a similar 1-2 year old car that's still in warranty and should provide years of cheap motoring.

Leave him to do it, someone has to buy brand new so the sensible buyers can get good used bargains.

They seem to be offering me £25k at 4.5%...

Yes I'm sure somebody who isn't bothered about performance and wants a car for town would be right at home in a 6 year old M3.

The OP asked what car I would buy if I had 20k to spend. That's my answer.
