I have 1 7850 2gig card in my pc at the mo, and have the chance of getting another to run in crossfire mode. My question is, is it worth it? Im currently playing Thief and an old fave of mine Mafia 2 at the mo. My monitors res is 1920x1080 so quite demanding. My pc whilst quite long in the tooth now suits me ok, til i upgrade cpu motherboard and ram.

I bought the MSI 7850 at xmas to replace my old 5770, and whilst its been a good upgrade, it just slows down a tad in mafia2. overclocked gpu and cpu, is much smoother however, but settings on medium mostly.

So really I can get another 7850 for £70 is it worth it?

Ps i looked at the Radeon R9 270 before the 7850 but opted for the 7850 was i wrong? is the R9 270 a better card?

So should i go 2 x 7850s or just buy a R9 270?

Your cpu is holding you back, not necessarily the gpu. getting a second is pretty pointless until you switch out your socket.

I went from Q6600 to a i7 920 years back - the difference is crazy and the cost to do it today second hand would probably be about £100!

A 7850 should walk all over mafia 2 , so the GPU is not your concern here.

Think you may be right, cos my overclocked quad core duo had a noticeable difference in mafia 2 when i overclocked it to 3.2ghz. Seems crazy that a cpu as good as that is bottle necking me. I will be upgrading my cpu/motherboard and ram in the coming months. As a short stop i was thinking another 7850 then it will go in nice in new system? or 1 x R9 270.

Ooh id love it but id need mobo ram on top of that. Would take a while to get it all. Its a bit pricey as ive just stepped down at work as trainer. Any cheaper alternatives not much worse?

Ok ive decided im going down the cpu mobo and ram route and not the crossfire solution. Now to find a decent setup. Thanks for the cpu ideas il certainly look into them. : ) many thanks.

That's Smarter in the long run, you'll only run into the same problem pretty soon. A CPU/MOBO/RAM combo only has a certain lifespan. I get 5 years or so out of mine and then move on. In that time I might add a 2nd hand CPU upgrade as a tide-me-over.

I'm sure your right. Im looking into the I5 cpus and mobos now. The socket is 1155 and the chipset choice is bewildering to me?? lol.

Yes, it's the cpu. The benefit of the 'K' chips is that they aren't locked, so you can overclock them to get better performance - and greater longevity.
