RC Helicopters

What model you looking at? Align-trex.co.uk are very reliable. I've ised fast lads and midlands models also.

I've been looking at the v911 (upgraded version) which can be had for £30 internationally. I'm not sure if my google-fu is weak or it's just not available over here.

OK so a slight change of plans. I've just spent the last 30 minutes counting my change jar and found I have £100 that I didn't realise I had!

So, circa £100 what would you suggest. I'm OK with second hand but could do with a link or what forum to join to find these bargains :)

It depends on a few things. Do you really want this as a hobby or is it just a play thing?

If you fancy it as a hobby, with £100 you could get a dx6 radio and a Msrx or mcxp second hand. I found the mcpx rather twitchy to start. The Msrx is very much a begineers model but will teach you orientation brilliantly. From there you could sell that on and pay a fe quid more for a 130x or similar. If you're brave, you could get a dx6 and 130x for around £125 second hand. Learn to fly that and you will have great fun with very little crash costs.

I'm the kind of person who would probably take this on as a hobby. My main concern is if I buy something too simple I'll get bored and then have to invest more to get something challenging.

I'll take a look at what you've suggested :)

What's the go-to forum/site to buy second hand?

My mate got my his RC helicopter the other day but it only lasted around 20 minutes

He flew it directly into the power lines and the whole area had no power for the whole weekend, LOL.

It wasn't one of those huge metal power lines it was a small one into our small town.

The helicopter smashed into the top and caused a huge spark and we heard a little boom at the box it was connected too. The helicopter instantly stopped working and fell to its death.

Also how incredibly stupid and inconsiderate to fly a heli that you don't know how to use near to some power lines.

its things like this that will get hobby flying banned.

Lol, naïve comment! :o

Its a long journey to learn to fly a RC helicopter!

My route was:

  1. PicoZ Gyro Zoomer (toy)
  2. Blade MCP
  3. Blade MSRx (didnt like it)
  4. Blade MSR (better)
  5. Blade MCPX V2
  6. Blade 300X
  7. HK 450 GT (Align clone)
  8. Thunder Tiger Raptor 30 nitro
  9. HK 250 FBL
  10. Tarot 450 Pro

It's been a long road ;). Don't think you will learn buy buying one heli!

The good news is, I have been able to sell my earlier helicopters on ebay for good money, this has greatly helped me fund the hobby.

The list above is the 'self taught' route.

You could just buy a Raptor 30 and join a club, but for Gods sake - don't try flying it without help, AND make sure your local club are able and willing to teach helicopters.
Most clubs just fly planks.

In the instructions of all helis I've seen, it says don't fly them near power lines.

In reaction to the above post, I thought I'd post my route.

March 2009 I bought an Esky Lama 3 after seeing my father's Blade CX2. This taught me the controls.
A couple of months later, I sold it and bought a Walkera 4#3. This taught me to hover in my living room in under 2 days. This was fixed pitch, flybarred.
Then I bought a honeybee FP. I learnt lazy 8s in the back garden with that. While I had it, I built a 450 clone.
I bought more models (Trex 500, Trex 250) and Phoenix simulator but my flying stood still.

I joined a club in May 2011, where I went about 5 times before they lost their field. I was warned this could happen when I joined, but it was cheap.
September 2011, I went to a fun fly and took my Trex 500. It was quite windy, and it made the gentle flying I was doing frustrating as I was being blown all over the place. I just decided to go for it and throw it about a bit. So in that flight I did my first fast figure 8s and my first stall turn and I was buzzing for weeks. I never looked back.
I got myself a car in 2013 and have since been at the club every weekend, weather permitting. I just love it.

If I were to start again, I'd go straight for a heli only club with a Trex 500, or a 450 if I couldn't afford the 500.

your list

No it's not.

Here's my list:

  1. Phoenix RC Sim
  2. Align 450 SeV2
It's not a long road at all.. it all depends how YOU want to do it. I really don't see why you thought you had to buy all those different helicopters to eventually get to a 450 size bird.

Did you teach yourself, or did you have lessons?
I take it you built your own Align 450 SE V2?
I still have an MCPX v2, HK 450 GT, Tarot 450 Pro, HK 250 FBL & Raptor 30.
