Druggy mum and kid on a US bus?

Christ, everyone on that bus was scum.
None more so than the miserable skidmark sitting there filming it all.

Child obviously in a vulnerable position and everyone just walks by.
My opinion of Philadelphians just went down a few notches

The other side to this, is what can people do in this situation. Sure ask and try to help. But especially in the US you can't help if you don't know what you're doing as you'd be likely sued if you did something wrong :). Unfortunately that's how it is. Sad state of affairs.

Sorry but that's a terrible excuse to not do something.
I would hope everyone on this forum would not just walk away from a situation like that.

Narcolepsy? One of my previous employers secretary had it. First time it happened, I was like, man she is scagged up and the boss looked at me, told me not to worry, said what it was.
She would nod off mid telephone call, was quite funny.

Mixture of this and the bystander effect. I'd like to think I'd help but I might not.

if you said anything she;d start screaming at you and of course being a woman even if smashed out of her face you'd be in the wrong.

same reason never ever intervene if you see a bf/husband hit their gf/wife, as they will BOTH fight you back.

What could I do? I have no medical training, I have no "real" knowledge of what to do in this situation. sure, I've seen people fitting in movies, don't touch them move away any objects, support their head if needed - but practical... Never been involved in this and could potentially (and probably) do more harm than good. As said, I have no training and no real knowledge.

I never mentioned walking away either, I mentioned trying to ask if she needed help, not that I'd leave her...

Not sure what help I'd be unfortunately. Other than picking up a phone and phoning the emergency services who then might be able to talk me through a few things... But in America (and this is America), you have to be more careful due to their suing culture. For example, some guy in the US is currently suing a major casino in Las Vegas, because he lost 500,000k gambling in a night. Because he states the casino got him drunk and they have a duty of care.

Another guy tried to sue budweiser for false advertising as they had a commercial with a guy drinking bud, surrounded by hot girls.

There is a law which tries to help those who come to peoples rescue which is called the 'Good Samaritan law' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Good_Samaritan_law )

You also have the Bystander Effect which is basically, the more people who are there, the less likely it is for someone to help, amongst other laws and effects - read the wiki if you're generally interested :)

They would both hit you back, but intervening in a fight, is a bit different than intervening in a situation where it's potentially life or death, a medical situation if you will. Obviously, if the women (or the man) is in such trouble, than the beating could be life threatening then people _should_ attempt to help, but I'm sure not many would.

The video depressed me. Not because people weren't helping and not because it ws being filmed with little to no remorse of the person filming, but because the woman was clearly in such a state where she was no longer the victim. The child in this video is the victim.
