The Console Market Is In Crisis: Hardcore gamers better off with high end gaming PC than the current

So really the PS4 and Xbox1 are doing really well this gen, but as older consoles and Wii U sales aren't very big it makes it appear as though the market is shrinking. I imagine as price comes down further and the big PS and XB games launch sales will explode. Very nearly pulled the trigger on an X1 the other day myself, the only reason I didn't is I don't have anywhere to put the thing !

Has anyone actually got any hardware vs software sales for the consoles? As in, the Wii sold 100mil units, but how many of those were over their huge xmas season sales during the hype years to non gamer family members, who then bought few if any more games ever again. While I suspect the majority of people who got ps3/360's would over time buy more consoles. Slightly skewed I guess by those who bought multiple consoles. I really don't know if Wii's failed as often as say 360's?

IF if Nintendo console sales drop as drastically as say 70% this gen, is that only going to cause a 10-15% drop in software sales because the software per box was much lower?

Either way, a lot lot more dev's are now gearing up for bigger titles on mobile. Mobile started with lots of small teams pumping out games quickly, but over time as the market started to show real potential the big money companies started to spend money making games for mobile. So will we see the "games industry" as a whole still growing because most of the drop in console sales, be it Wii U/Wii's or handheld, are offset by mobile growth?

Who cares anyway, there is money there, the consoles aren't under powered, the ecosystem probably reduces game dev costs significantly as pc/both consoles are so close together. AAA companies aren't going to up and go "zomg, I can only make 300million this year instead of 350million... i quit".

first of all those very specific dates were chosen for a reason.

the first date just happens to coincide with the wii, ps2, ps3, 360 and psp being new devices or in their prime and they all happen to be consoles which sold very very well over their lives.

it's also before the recession when tons of people had tons of disposable income.

second date is in the middle of a recession, tons of people struggling and less disposable income for all but those at the top. it's also an era of console gaming where we don't have a fad console like the wii which sold purely on hype and was then never utilised by the majority of owners after the honeymoon period.

back then handhelds were unique now you can play those games on your phone/tablet so that has killed the PS Vita and 3DS market so again those numbers cannot be directly compared. everyone owns a smartphone and/or tablet these days back then they didn't.

comparing all that then no the console market is not dead.

handheld market has been diluted to the point sony and nintendo would be better off just packing it in after this generation and let developers make games for tablets and smartphones (which you can hook a controller up to) than to try and stay ahead of the game.

Also you cannot compare the power of a high end pc using the best parts available £1000 graphics cards which you can multiple of with an all in one system costing £330.

build me a pc for substantially less than £330 which can play 1080P games at 30-60fps with the quality of that on ps4 then you may have a point about pc's being better.

pc market is dead which is why brand new games cost half the price of the console version.

No, its because there is no platform holder ie Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo.

Also, the PC games market is probably the healthiest its been in the last 5 years which is mostly down to how long the last gen of consoles lasted and Valves aggressive sales tactics.

Nintendo's games are great, especially for the younger and older generation - I think they could move into focusing on game development for Xbox and PS4 platforms, their titles would be very popular on those consoles
(mario, mariokart and all the derivatives)

Even if they just made one next gen ish Mario title for the PS4 it would generate massive sales. They could keep the core titles on Nintendo hardware but have some kind of deal with Sony for a line of Mario games different to what we have seen so far. Sales would be huge, but I guess long term it would make people even less likely to buy Nintendo hardware. They don't want to shoot themselves in the foot.

If they would just make the SNES 2, better hardware than PS4/Xbox1. With proper next gen titles. This would bring people back to Nintendo imho.

Agreed it's only going to get stronger as well. I like the fact we get all the majority of console titles now but with much better graphics fidelity. It means that in a few years you can go back and play the games again, up the graphics. Gives games way more longevity on PC. Whereas on PS3 for example in a few years games will look dated and they will always look that way, whereas fire up your older PC games and up the settings, use on new tech like 4K screens and it gives the game new life. PC will keep evolving and with a huge back catalogue of games that spans all of the previous console gens while the older consoles fade away, and end up being emulated on PC lol..

The first statement is total nonsense, PS3 had a 7800 gtx era gpu, which was well over a year old when the PS3 was released. Whole thing is typical garbage internet 'journalism' to get a few clicks.

Who wants a console anyway, you can't bench Heaven 4 or Firestrike Extreme on it !!!

Let's bench GTA V/Forza 5/Uncharted 3, Killzone: Shadowfall, The Last of Us on a PC and see how we get on shall we? Oh wait.....

You keep your benchmarks, I'm enjoying playing games.
