Is this any sort of cuisine?

My new Finnish flatemate mainly just eats salmon, which I can pretty much understand (if not the way he fries it for about a hour on either side).

However, his other favorite dish appears to be gnocchi with a sauce consisting of tinned tomatos, tinned coconut milk and tinned black olives. This has me utterly perplexed. Some sort of Finnish/Italian/Thai fusion food? Or am I missing a treat? :p

The addition of coconut is an odd one, but maybe he likes a creamy sauce without using actual cream? Maybe just a taste thing.

Gnocchi and coconut milk/cream? Unusual, but I've seen it a couple of times and there are variations on the theme - usually with curried gnocchi or using sweet potato, etc.

Gnocchi, tomato and black olive? Pretty classical pairing, although you'd expect there to be basil, lemon, a little chilli and a healthy portion of parmesan adoring the plate as well.

Potato gnocchi with coconut and tomato? Jesus H Christ, that's bad enough, then he puts black olives in there as well?

Sit him down and have a word with him. He's clearly confused.

Probably just like the taste. There plenty of things I like the taste off and cook at home as its easy and I like it. Who cares if its a traditional dish.

Interesting theory.

I take it you're completely ruling out it being some sort of cult Finnish cuisine drawn up in the depths of winter when there's barely any sunlight and they just grab whatever tin is closest to hand?

Well none of those ingredients are typically Finnish, they're not known for a tropical climate to grow such things.

This, why are people so incapable of talking to the people they live with?

Why are there so many condescending little snotbags on this forum? We have plenty of grown up conversations on all manner of topics, thank you very much :p.

Generally not in the kitchen though, because it's about the size of half a broom cupboard and you don't want to be stepping on other people's feet when they're trying to cook up a coconut and olive masterpiece.
