Howdy Folks.

other half wants the kitchen tiled, we currently have a stainless steel splashback above the hob running up to the extractor. are they normally just glued to the wall?

whats the best way of un-gluing them? i wanna tile that area instead.

Usually siliconed yeah, with heatproof silicone for obvious reasons.

Get a big ****ing cold chisel in behind it is how I do them, smash it off, then make good after. Think of it like tiling.

thanks.

could i lift it up slighly and get a long saw blade in behind cutting away at the silicone? would that make less me than prying off?

You could probably try get a sharp, flexible knife in behind but to be honest after removing the silicone you're gonna **** the wall up anyway so you might as well brute it off and give it a quick skim.

Or that's how I always see it.

will do that then, thanks.

It's best just to rip it off and repair as said, faffing around with knifes/whatever will just take longer then re-plaster/plaster-boarding the wall behind it anyway, and you'd have to do that getting all the silicone based sealant off anyway.

I've seen joiners cut the plasterboard around it before and just take it off with the plasterboard, no use taking it off the wall then taking the wall to pieces basically, just take it all off in one bit.

well i did it in about 15 mins in the end.

i jammed a chisel in behind and that made a bit of a hole behind the one side but i noticed it was chipboard underneath the steel.

i got my hammer inbetween the chipboard and steel and then wiggled it and pryed at it. upon wiggling i noticed a couple of screws up the top under the cooker hood.

i removed the cooker hood and the screws, took off the steel and then claw hammered the chipboard off. all in all it didnt damage the wall much. there were a few patches where the minimal amount of sealant holding the chipboard on was.

do i need to fill that or do i just let the adhesive for the tiles fill it?
