I've just noticed how cheap these are, and with needing to take the ZTT off the road soon, I'll need something in the mean time.
I know they'll be so appealing on fuel, but apart from that what have people's experience been with them?

I'll be looking at a late (2000ish) auto, and will try and find a decent example and not a £1000 shed.

Any advice or posts telling me not to would be appreciated... :p

Evo running gear, AYC pump can go? Will drink fuel, maybe high insurance if an import. Other then that, pretty decent.

Well... :)

I've had mine for 5 years now!

They've got a lovely, smooth 2.5 litre V6. You won't get much more peak power than the standard ~280bhp because the turbos won't flow enough at high revs, but you'll get ~270lb-ft of torque from ~3000-7000rpm :)

The 4wd system is the same as from an Evo, with the AYC rear diff.

Servicing is engine oil/filter, and AYC fluid in the rear diff every 4500 miles, and full replacement of all fluids and cambelt etc every 45000 miles.

The auto boxes won't "fall apart" - they are very good boxes, and as the vast majority of the cars are automatics (very few manuals), relatively, you hear more about "issues" with autoboxes than you do manuals. Normally, it's from people not changing the fluid when the service schedule says to, or by using incorrect fluids in it.

For more information check out Club VR4 or just ask here and I'll answer any further questions!

The great thing about them is that you probably won't be spending much more than £3k for even the very best of examples, they are ridiculously cheap for what they are.

Pretty much what Confused posted. Lovely cars, and (imo) look the dog's danglies.

Don't expect more than 20mpg, and be prepared for high insurance costs...

Great cars, still miss mine

I might get one as a weekend toy if I spot something nearby.

Confused is most up to date, but in general they are very reliable. The engine is a gem, and although it shares it turbos with the 335i I much prefer the vr4 engine... so much torque so low down and the chassis is pretty solid too.

Easy cars to work on, its about the only car I know my way about. Owners club was great (not been on it in a while). Go for it :)

Lovely cars, very very nearly bought one instead of my TT Supra, they would have fantastic handling if they were a class smaller so for their size it's amazing, and more BHP than the EVO of the day (they are to the EVO what the M5 is to the M3).
