How did beer get so popular? It isn't even very good.

I am the opposite. I only like larger and cocktails. Can manage ale, white wine, champagne at a push but don't like red wine or spirits.

Not very classy I know but I try to drink decent larger and not Fosters or Carling and the like.

All my mates love single malt Whiskey but the do spend a lot on it so there are some benefits to having no taste.

Op clearly has never actually tasted beer ;)

Larger than what?

Beer makes you feel bloated, which in turn leads to burping / farting contests. Man has been entertained ever since!

Whisky isn't a very social drink, for me it would mean I would go from sober to blind drunk pretty damn quick. I'd miss out on the fun slightly sozzled section of the night where all the good stuff happens.

Boring, serious answer: In the olden days water was full of bacteria like cholera, typhoid and dysentry and people didn't know about boiling water so it wasn't a good idea to drink water. Wine and beer were great for avoiding nasty water borne diseases because the alcohol killed the bacteria.

I personally enjoy all types of beer except perhaps Guiness.

Yes I enjoy the taste of Carling/Carlsberg/San Miguel as much as ale such as Bombardier/Spitfire/Hob Goblin etc.

I dont like it, never really have.

If i can choose any drink it is a nice cider on a sunny evening.

Westons, Aspalls. Magners pear is remarkably good.

Might be as my parents never ever drank at all

Only people who don't drink call lager and ale and bitter "beer" to those people and americans, its all "beer".

Heiknekan, groslch, becks, holtson pilsner, san miguel these are some of the most tasty and refreshing drinks on the planet.

Drink better beer.

I usually drink a good traditional ale, something where you can actually taste the ingredients.
