How did beer get so popular? It isn't even very good.

Only people who don't drink call lager and ale and bitter "beer" to those people and americans, its all "beer".

Heiknekan, groslch, becks, holtson pilsner, san miguel these are some of the most tasty and refreshing drinks on the planet.

Not sure if you're serious. There some of the worst beers on the planet!

Brewdog is my favourite at the moment, o nom.

Drink better beer.

I usually drink a good traditional ale, something where you can actually taste the ingredients.

I hate the way people who drink "real ale" try and objectively claim it's "better beer". It's different, the rest is subjective. Reminds me of people who think good music is by definition non-chart stuff.

Personally I'd take a popular lager brand over "real ale" any day, and yes I've tried it but I can't get on with the flat and warm thing.

I may not drink anymore, but I did really love my ales. And my lagers, and pretty much anything with alcohol in it. But I digress. As posted earlier, beer was a way around poop infested water. Why not try a nice lager like cobra, or try some ales from your local breweries if there are any.

Boring, serious answer: In the olden days water was full of bacteria like cholera, typhoid and dysentry and people didn't know about boiling water so it wasn't a good idea to drink water. Wine and beer great for avoiding nasty water borne diseases because the alcohol killed the bacteria.

8/10 ;)

The alcohol content of beer is nowhere near high enough to kill bacteria. HOWEVER the brewing process starts with extended boiling of all the ingredients! This is what sterilises the resultant brew. If the finished beer becomes contaminated it will rapidly go "Off" and taste/smell disgusting letting everybody know that it is no longer fit to drink!

I dare say that the first people who realised that it was the boiling rather than the Alcohol tended to end up head first in the mash tub before they were able to tell too many other people about it! :D

It's not something I'm into but it always amuses me how some people talk about beer festivals. Wayhayyy, beer festival!!! You'll be drunk if you go there, all that beer!

As though you walk into a normal pub and they run out of drink after you've had 3 pints.:p
