Time for a new boiler

Pitchfork is totally correct with BG overcharging on prices, etc, but get a second opinion from a local plumber, boiler 14 years plus it's had a good life, heat exchanger today, tomorrow something else, seen it with Baxi, Potteron, & a few other makes.

Pointless having BG boiler insurance that doesn't cover the repairs, some boiler insurance firms even give you a contribution towards the replacement of a system if it is considered beyond repair.

Also some household insurances will include or offer boiler insurance within the policy as standard, or a small extra charge.

Worcester Bosch.

That's what I have and it's been spot on in the 3 years I've had it. Expensive but you get what you pay for. Know relatives who bought cheap combi boilers and as soon as it got to winter it broke....

Had a Worcester Bosch boiler installed yesterday. So far, so good.
Cost me just over £2600. As a comparison the quote from BG after applying all their current promotional discounts was over £3700.
Go on to Worceter Bosch's website, use the link on there to find your nearest accredited installer and give them a ring.
Our new boiler came with an 8 year parts and labour warranty (as long at it's properly serviced each year).

Step one get an independent quote for fixing your existing boiler, you might be surprised at how cheap it is compared to BG quote making back the cost of a new boiler in fuel savings is highly unlikely given the massively reduced life expectancy of combi boilers when compared to the older generation. This is particularly relevant if you are not planning to stay long term as a combi boiler will make next to no difference on the value of your house.

If you do go for a replacement get lots of quotes and play them off against one another don't plum for BG just because it's convenient as they will likely rob you blind.

The service which over 8 years will cost you more than a replacement boiler and do little more than vacuum up the dust, I know a gas installer will be along to list all the stuff they do but seriously they are in and out in no time on an annual service so ignore the exaggerated claims.

8 year warranty atm iirc if installed thru an approved WB engineer :)

Yep, pretty much every new domestic development ive done work on for the past couple of years exclusively use WB because of the warranty. Cracking boilers too regardless of the warranty, have a 28i Junior myself and it hasn't missed a beat in 6 years. Also their customer service is supposed to be excellent when something does go wrong, not that ive had to use them.

we went from a Baxi back boiler to a WB 30CDi, day it was installed I had to open all the doors and windows LMAO

Guess I was just used to being so cold all the time :p

Policy doesn't cover HE? What policy is it?

I ask as I've not long had my HE replaced by NPower, but was looking for a cheaper policy when renewal comes. I'll be able to steer clear of whichever BG policy you have. ;)

Why was that, if you have the same radiators?

Nah replaced those too, added an extra as well.
Gone from old, assuming gunked up single panel things, one appeared to be 3 seperate rads welded together! To new double panel convectors.
Went a little over on BTU, "just in case", day it was installed we had it on full whack to test the pressure/heat and check for any cold spots, ended up sitting in doors with all teh doors and windows open, bloody sweating >.<

Hmmm how much did that lot set you back, if you don't mind me asking? I only have single panel radiators too, and compared to my parents' house they seem to be somewhat cack.

Can't remember off the top of my head mate, think it was about 2300
Nigh on full replumb of the entire house, removal of the old Baxi and storage tanks, installation of new boiler, all new rads. Boiler was also resituated to an upstairs back bedroom rather than where the baxu was.

Added 3 new rads, went with the WB 30 CDi a rather expensive WB wireless stat and proper Drayton TRV's, TF1 filter and a full chemical flush.

All done within 3 days, really happy with the job, their pipe routing left a little to be desired tho so we redid the piping in a more efficient manner, and despite using speedfit still covered all piping in insulation.

Coincidentally I was discussing this with a gas safety engineer on Friday and, similarly to people here, he would only talk about two brands: WB and Vaillant.

His opinion was that Both Brands were fantastic but that he'd choose Vaillant over WB for two reasons:

1) He said that servicing WB boilers was more of a pain as they tend to make them more compact - out of warranty this would add to the cost because it meant that internal parts needed to be removed in order to get to the problem part - because of the extra time involved. He also said that, in some circumstances, this sometimes meant that a part could be damaged whilst trying to get to another part (I did think that was a bit silly)

2) Simple - Vaillant were cheaper on average??
