Our Bullmastiff caught a burglar last night

Awaits Police calling round to your house to claim that a lost man was savaged by your dog.

To be fair, that temperament is not something to be proud of. Your dog would attack a stranger (not on command). Sorry, uncool.

Haha are you serious? He's a family pet who spends half his life rolled on his back for a stream of kids (my mrs works with children). Finding some goon who's just rifled through your shed and is approaching the back door (when the exit from the garden is the opposite way) at 10.30pm is hardly randomly attacking strangers. What could have happened if the dog wasn't there? The guy clearly knew my fiancee was home as the light was on and she was singing along to music in the kitchen as he headed to the back door!!

I agree. It shouldn't just spontaneously attack people it doesn't recognise on its property. What if someone had actually been lost? I know you said you have high fences, but even so!

Awesome, good job doggie :)

... awaits "lost" man explaining why he was "lost" in dog's territory (a private back garden surrounded by 6ft fences) where he had no reason to be.

Don't be silly.

A lost person in your back garden surrounded by 6ft fencing?

What planet to you guys live on lol?

Clearly the lost person in the back garden surrounded by 6ft fencing used to live on earth, but was abducted by aliens who erronously dropped him back off in a 6ft fenced off garden. That's the only reasonable explanation for a complete stranger to be in your enclosed fenced off back garden at 10:30 at night. So yes;

I'll echo some of the concerned voices in the thread.

A burglar being savaged by the house dog is great, of course, but it does concern me that these dogs exist when you have kids climbing into people's gardens to fetch balls and suchlike. Yeah they shouldn't be going in without permission, but that's kids isn't it

Fantastic story and exactly why investing in a protection dog is worthwhile. Companionship and a fearless defender of the family. What more do you want?

Kids can run into roads to fetch balls, so ban all cars?

excellent, good work hatton :D

On a related note and possibly something to be cautious of these people are proper scum and might try something low like throwing poisoned meat into the garden either in revenge or to try a second time (similiar stuff has happened around here) so something possibly to be aware of..

yeah id be wary of this also.

You're lucky the dog wasn't stabbed!
Burglars / thieves normally carry screwdrivers and wouldn't think twice about using them if they were being mauled by a large dog, anything to get away and not get caught.

Personally I would never place the safety of a loved family pet in this position unless I seriously felt the safety of my family was in serious and imminent danger!!

Plus it sounds like your dog is poorly trained and dangerous tbh, imho the only time this behavior is acceptable from a dog is if the owner is actually being physically attacked!!
I don't know about you guys but when I was younger I use to occasionally sneak into peoples gardens to retrieve footballs, Frisbees, tennis balls ..etc ..etc
It sounds like I would have lost half my arm/face if I had tried to retrieve anything from your garden!! (Ohhh and a big  to the people thinking it serves you right for being on someones property )

You're assuming he's unintelligent and indiscriminate. He's fine with kids and, unlike some people in this thread he can tell the difference between a real threat and a random child looking for a football. :p

If the neighbours either side had a kid they'd presumably already be aware there was an 11 stone dog living there.

Ignore them, some people don't understand dogs.

My dogs a complete pushover, doesn't have an aggressive bone in his body but if somebody startles him or enters his "territory" unexpectedly he reacts and sounds like he's ready to kill them. Reality he'd probably just lick them to death but if somebody comes in the garden he'll react whereas people coming in the front door after ringing the bell he knows are friends.

I don't know enough about dogs to know if they really are able to deduce such things but, in any case, I did enjoy reading about your burglar getting his comeuppance.

Love it, thank you for this :p Two golden retrievers here, neither is even remotely violent (Quite the opposite in fact), but like others have said, they're fully capable of distinguishing between people they know, people they don't but who have been let in, and people they don't who haven't :)

Tricky situation, no doubt the burglar got exactly what he deserved but I guarantee he'll try to sue if he's caught & charged.

I've had all manner of builders etc. in my back garden recently and half the time different labourers turn up on different days, if I had a dog that just went for someone he/she didn't recognise I'd be concerned.
