Our Bullmastiff caught a burglar last night

I went to a family friends house who has 2 of these. She is a lesbian with 2 young girls so not too many blokes about.

I just walked into the house without knocking to have these 2 dogs fighting to get over the child safe gate to get at me. Never seen an animal look so evil.

Hope you have bought your dog plenty of treats! Great dog :) (11st though?)

I'll echo some of the concerned voices in the thread.

A burglar being savaged by the house dog is great, of course, but it does concern me that these dogs exist when you have kids climbing into people's gardens to fetch balls and suchlike. Yeah they shouldn't be going in without permission, but that's kids isn't it

Difference is, a kid would, if anything, climb over a fence in daylight to find a ball. Or go round and ask for it back... If a man is climbing into a garden, in the dark, wearing dark clothes, that's not normal. The dog picked up on that and acted upon it.

Use your brains guys.

Haha are you serious? He's a family pet who spends half his life rolled on his back for a stream of kids (my mrs works with children). Finding some goon who's just rifled through your shed and is approaching the back door (when the exit from the garden is the opposite way) at 10.30pm is hardly randomly attacking strangers. What could have happened if the dog wasn't there? The guy clearly knew my fiancee was home as the light was on and she was singing along to music in the kitchen as he headed to the back door!!

So you're saying that your dog has the ability to distinguish between threat/non threat, based on the time of night and who is walking up to a door?

Magic dog...

I'm not trying to play devils advocate, just intrigued as to how you know it would have behaved differently to anyone else.

also, whos to say that the dog just approached the guy at speed and stopped and after the door was shut the guy punched/kicked the dog to provoke it.

facts. none of you have them.

Yeah, or maybe that guy murdered Hatton's mother and Hatton recognised him?
Or he spilt his drink bargin' past all clumsy-like?

When he was on the floor you should have tied him up,but i guess you dont know if they have a knife that could end your life in a instant.

Because dogs are sentient and have intelligence way beyond most humans in situations like this. As I already said, they pick up on everything from massive rises in cortisol, adrenaline, and general 'shiftiness'. Not to mention the manner of the guy's approach and the fact he was somewhere he definitely shouldn't have been.

This is a dog who happily sits on the front while I clean the car and wags his tail as people pass by (no fence). They're not stupid and tbh I can only imagine you haven't any real dog owning experience. As the law stands, the burglar hasn't a leg to stand on (literally now, thanks to Hatton lol). There's no offence in having a dog attack someone on private property like this, and the police were congratulatory about it when they attended.

Gorgeous dog. That's a real dog unlike my parents rats haha.

I sincerely hope there's no backlash from this :( the dog did the right thing!

Hope the dog removed the mans ability to reproduce :)

But your average car driver isn't going to chase the kid and run them down.

Kids are far more likely to be killed by a vehicle than a dog, especially one locked up behind a 6 foot fence. If a kid climbs into a yard protected by a 6 foot fence and gets mauled, well that is unfortunate, but not the dog owners fault. Why were the parents not supervising, or educating their child correctly?

Pointing out the threat this poses to kids is like pointing out the threat puddles pose. Sure kids sometimes drown in puddles, but it's not very likely to happen.

If they'd had a knife it would have found it's way into the dog.

no because maybe he liked dogs, and he would not be afraid to stab a person, you never know, you should tell your mum to get a intruder light installed so a light would come on once movement is detected, you would see the backgarden light up then through the window.

It was my fiancee, who is definitely not my mum. :p The back garden already has lighting, but that didn't seem to deter Sammy Smackhead. Luckily the dog... did.
