2014 Chilli Growers Thread

Came home yesterday to some germination at last 4/8 germinated so far, looks like there is a lot of catching up to do. I'll move the 4 germinated plants into propper pots at the weekend

Yeah its slow going here, the plants are on our kitchen window with no other source of heat bar the sun and the radiator which is a fair bit away, not ideal conditions but I am pleased they have finally germinated. Hopefully now that the weather is improving and getting warmer I'll see some faster progress. I had 2 plants a couple of years ago that didn’t produce any fruit but did flower, I planted them out very early though and I think that may have been the problem. This year I will be keeping them inside as long as possible, and watering them a lot more carefully.

So I pruned my largest annuum (supposed) this evening. Lopped it in half as per the earlier vid.
Left the other as is for the moment as it's not quite as big.

Not too worried though as it's had a load of growth over the last few days alone and I just noticed I have roots coming out of the bottom of my 15cm pot..

They'll be fine. Nature seems to appreciate a bit of rough. Chillies in particular don't like to be cared for too much. It will be interesting to see how they compare when they're fruiting (with the mystery fruit).

Yeah I'm sure it'll be fine, like I say it's thrown out 4-5 new leaves in the last week or two alone..

Even the little choc bhut is going for leaf #5 I noticed last night. The ajis are getting a bit lanky too, is that normal or will I be in for the same pruning exercise at a later date?

The smallest plant I have now is the (possible) gorongongongong (!), not sure if that's normal?

Test aji is also doing pretty well, nowhere near the others though.

Goronong, Yeh mine are titchy and don't look like they're growing. It may be the seeds are not of good source. I was unsure of source but I think they were supermarket bought chillies, and as such may be designed to be high vigour/yield fruiting hybrids, and they may not be designed for good seed stock.

Aji's, these can be a bit lanky but once we get more sunshine the problem will reduce.

Don't get me wrong it's small but the goronong does seem to be growing slowly.

I need to crack on with getting some more space (greenhouse), at some point all of the little'uns are going to need some more space and the dining room window isn't going to cope. I can probably squeeze in another small greenhouse with 3 15cm pots in each.

I know not necessarily soon, but it may take me a few weeks maybe even months to get a greenhouse sorted.

Chilli hybridisation (warning, chilli pron):

I have created a hybrid myself, Santa Fe Grande x Orange Habanero, but the first season it did poorly. I am trying it again this season. I just used the cotton bud to do the umm sexy bits. The plant was OK but the fruit didn't really develop well, not true to type, like some genetic experiments tend to throw up. Or, it could have just been down to other factors like compost (I wasn't happy with JAB recipe last year), or lack of good sun.

Santa Fe Grande are probably one of my favorites and I might look to try another cross this season, probably with a different partner (maybe Mesilla).

Thanks to Herman for the Bulgarian Carrot and the Aji Limon i have put them in this morning, hope i get something this time. If anyone has any super hots they have spare they would be much appreciated if you want rid of them as my Butch T's bit the dust so to speak, flipping gutted. Thanks again

You're welcome. What method of germination are you using? If you had problems previously, we may be able to help identify any possible errors you may be making?

ETA: Also, the reason I sent these chillies is because you will have to be an amazing grower to be able to plant a superhot (Chinense) now (very late) and have it produce usable ripe fruit this year. Those I sent are going to give you more chance at having something to cook with by late summer.

Superhot (Chinense) growers tend to germinate seeds late December to get fruit within the short and unreliable British season.

I can't emphasize enough that a heated propagator is the way forward for germination, I was shocked at my germination rate. I need to pot some of mine on now, I have roots sticking out of the peat pots. Only nightmare for me is that they will no longer all fit under my lights, not quite nice enough yet to putting any outside.

Happy to say the plants are recovering and the leaves are growing back. I think the main mistake was taking the lid off the propagator as they were getting amplified direct sunlights through the window then. Had I left the lid on I think they would have still gone droopy from the heat but not burned.

Got some going here too - the girlfriend bought me a gift pack for Christmas. Not doing to badly so far but only 3 of the 4 I sowed have germinated and grown although one is now growing as two plants in one pot it would appear :p

Habañero seeds are what I'm growing ... will see how we go!

My list of successful germinations and likely survivor's:

CAP 253c
Aji Limon
Mesilla
Sant Fe Grande
Goronong (?)
Choc Bhut Jolokia
Bulgarian Carrot
Pimento de Padron
Ancho Mulato
Trinidad Scorpion

These still in with a fairly good chance:

Jamaican Yellow Mushroom
Black Scorpion Tongue
Trinidad Marouga
Criolla Sella
Fatalii
Naranja Picante
Trinidad Perfume
Trinidad Seasoning
Santa Fe Grande x Orange Habanero
Ancho Polbano
Pasilla
Guajillo
CAP 267

The list expanded a bit over the past month or so :)

wow, where do you all with the large crops put them all out of interest?

my OH is whinging about the 7 I have :D

been planning my greenhouse this afternoon, looks like its going to be a 6x4x4 lean-to affair on the side of the shed at the bottom of the garden which gets all of the sun from the south from dawn to dusk.

the pruned annum (?) looks like it has started shooting new leaves already..
