Our Bullmastiff caught a burglar last night

And still the answer is no. If your dog attacks someone on your own property, you do not have to have it destroyed (unless it is a banned breed and the police attend in which case they will confiscate it under the DDA). However, most people do because they're under the retarded illusion that once your dog bites someone it gets a taste for blood. A stupid retarded myth from the dog fighting world about "blooding" dogs.

I thought it was due to the salt content in the blood being higher. But anyway I don't doubt that dogs are quite intelligent but how have you reinforced this escapade? Did you shower him with affection that might make him think it's okay to randomly attack strangers or did 6ou negatively reinforce the behaviour?

I don't see that point you are trying to make.

You don't see the distinction between behaviours in a dog that are more suited to be a home pet and those to be active attack dogs on police patrol?

Yea me neither. Im sure I'm sure everyone in the country has the same skills and discipline as a trained police handler and knows exactly how to control the dog in all instances.

Like in this instance where the dog just attacked a randomer despite no command being issued or a call to stop or return. Nice.

Did you say you worked for the 50?

I thought it was due to the salt content in the blood being higher.

Why would higher salt content in the blood make a dog more prone to biting people once it had tasted it? Dogs are more likely to eat their own or other animals feces if they're lacking in nutrients and salts. As Rainmaker elaborated, the blooding myth was perpetuated by the humane society. Hoods picked it up as gospel. A dog doesn't get into the pit because it likes the taste of blood. It gets in the pit because that's all it knows and through... what you said... reinforcement. How most dogs are trained. Whether you're praising a dog using a high pitched and excitable voice during a dog fight, or conditioning it through clicker training in the police or military, it's through reinforcement of it's actions that it learns its behaviour. But a dog is also an independent animal quite capable of making it's own decisions. And it will do so. Particularly working breeds. A police dog in a riot situation doesn't need to be given a command to know to be intimidating. It will just go off in response to the situation. But can be brought under control again by a simple command. A sheep dog and a sheep herder will almost have a telepathic link as to what each other is thinking and a good dog (in herding trials) requires minimal input from the herder. But a simple whistle can bring the dog back into line with what the herder wants. And most of all, a dog will protect it's pack. Without needing to be told to do so, if it feels the situation requires it. And once the situation is dealt with it will come indoors and it'll be as if nothing ever happened.

Jesus that dog is ****ing huge! I wouldn't wanna get on his bad side

You should see the caucasian ovcharka. Those things can get up to 14 stone. Used for herding, livestock protection and bear hunting. Perfectly legal to own. I'm not scared of many dogs, but the ovcharka intimidates the hell out of me. The pit bull has a reputation for being agressive. Well, the ovcharka is the Russian counter part. Except with a lot more weight behind it and much less likely to do as it's told.

The one time dogs are better than cats.

/troll

Nice work mutt.

I dunno. Some cats would work pretty well as guard cats.

I believe the theory or fact would be that humans have more salt in their blood than animals would get from more normal foods due to our high salt intake diet.

I've never heard it. But if it's a fact, have you links to anything that says dogs bite people more than once because humans have high salt content in their blood?

You're lucky the dog wasn't stabbed!
Burglars / thieves normally carry screwdrivers and wouldn't think twice about using them if they were being mauled by a large dog, anything to get away and not get caught.

Personally I would never place the safety of a loved family pet in this position unless I seriously felt the safety of my family was in serious and imminent danger!!

Plus it sounds like your dog is poorly trained and dangerous tbh, imho the only time this behavior is acceptable from a dog is if the owner is actually being physically attacked!!
I don't know about you guys but when I was younger I use to occasionally sneak into peoples gardens to retrieve footballs, Frisbees, tennis balls ..etc ..etc
It sounds like I would have lost half my arm/face if I had tried to retrieve anything from your garden!! (Ohhh and a big  to the people thinking it serves you right for being on someones property )

When would you do this in the dead of night? The people living there would see and be careful with the dog, if you are going to get a ball. Most don't mind too much, occasionally get some old stodge.

I think "The Running Man" has had a bad experience with getting a dog to lick his salty ballsack, hence his dislike of dogs and obsession with salt levels. :D
