Know this is a long shot as these games are seriously old now but for those who still play or have played DOW before, are the expansions worth the £9.99 they still command even today?

If not feel free to suggest some similar games to me (currently checking out Starcraft 2 also).

Cheers.

They're well worth it except for Soulstorm imo. Winter Assault has a fun campaign and Dark Crusade has a an incredible amount of re-playability in the campaign mode.

Great games, I do prefer DoW II and the expansions. All worth a purchase with plenty of good gameplay to boot.

I head heard the same about Soulstorm from someone else so thats good to have another view confirm it.

I'm also playing the demo of DOW2 and although the building element is not there, this is made up for by the graphics and strategy I think - looking forward to playing it properly.

Thanks for the replies :)

For DoW1 Winter Assault is pretty good (if you liked the original campaign you'll like it, it's in the same style), Dark Crusade is good but changes the format of the campaign to a risk style overmap with less story (it's not totally removed but lessened). Soulstorm is an abomination that should be ignored at any cost.

I'd be careful about picking up DoW2 at the minute though, the base game and the Chaos Rising expansion are tied to Games for Windows Live, which shuts down soon, and I wouldn't hold my breath for a patch.

Soulstorm is practically just Dark Crusade with 2 more races and a slightly bigger campaign (multiple planets instead of just one IIRC).

Played all the expansions over the years and enjoyed every one.

Currently playing Dawn of War 2: Retribution which I got off steam for £4.99 when it was 'Deal of the day', bargain.

From what I remember Winter Assault was alright, though I didn't get on with Dark Crusade, I felt it lacked focus. The DoW 2 series is better, imho. Even though that might be considered heresy...

But as long as your game/expansion features Gabriel Angelos, you'll be all set. I love that guy. :D

I actually liked Soulstorm. But would struggle to recommend it these days unless you can put up with old graphics.

Good point about GFWL and DOW2. These days I am not much of an RTS fan and prefer DOW2 and its lower unit count. But the linear story, whilst OK, is still a near arrow straight line which will always disappoint after the freedom of original's 3rd and 4th expansions.

Tbh I hadnt thought about the whole GWLive thing - thats a good point thanks.

Think I might have to check out some of the expansions and if nothing else get DOW2 cheap so I can play the campaign.

I know its old but never had the chance to play it before lol

Love the original DoW series, all the expansions were great. Recently got DoW2, not going to lie, but I think it's terrible... Graphically, I admit it does look a little better, but managed half and hour and was bored to tears.
