So to cut a long story really short, I'm in need of something newer than my current car (P reg Fiesta 1.3) it's pretty much on it's last legs, MOT is due in 2 months and it WILL fail horribly.

At a guess I'd estimate there to be well over £500's worth of work that needs doing as well as 2 new tyre's and a full service.

So I'm on the look out for something else, running costs aren't a big issue as long as it isn't insane.

I've got my eyes on a 2002 Honda Accord 1.8 VTEC Sport, fairly local to me, has 80k on the clock, cam belt changed at 70k and recently serviced.

Downside is tax runs out this month so that's another £280 on top of the asking price of £1k.

Worth it and most importantly is it a reliable enough car?

Sounds good. As long as it's FSH, got an MOT and is a reliable car (which an early 00s Honda Accord certainly is) you'll be fine. Ask the seller for £100 for the tax. I thought tax on older cars was only around £230 ish.

Also check the internet for previous advisories it's had during its MOTs. And don't drive your car with bald tyres and in a bad state of repair!

Cars registered pre 2001 are either 140 or 225 a year, as its a 2002 and a band K its a hefty 280.

Exhaust needs replacing on my current car, 1 back tyre is near legal limit (but replace in pairs) and need a new battery as it loses charge when left for an hour or more, even though the alternator is fine.

They are rock solid cars mate, I still have my 6th gen and will keep it forever as long as nothing fatal happens to it as I haven't found anything that is as good an all rounder and fits my idea of what I want from that type of cars. You can negotiate the price as the value of these cars are not great so you can pick em up cheap, they are reliable but on an older car you will find age related niggles and the cars had one or common issues, although mine hasn't cost me anything despite being regularly ragged.

Agree with the above, although they're good cars these accords are now worth peanuts and the one you've found has some obvious faults - few hundred off should see you right

Common niggles:

Car cutting out randomly - worn ignition switch
EML on - o2 sensors or egr
Handbrake - seized or sticky

Can't think of anything else from on top of my head.

Age related or general:

Corrosion - manufacturing fault behind arch covers near footwell and firewall
Gearbox - should be silky smooth
Engine - make sure it revs normal, no hesitation etc
Knocks from suspension - arbs or balljoints
brake and fuel lines - they corrode
water leaks - in boot or footwell
oil change - make sure its had scheduled oil changes

Ok cool, car is listed at £950, MOT till July and TAX till end of the month, condition wise it looks good in the photo's other than a scuff on the rear bumper, serviced in Oct '13 and had CAM belt changed at 70k along with 4 new tyres.

Reckon I would knock it down a hundred or two?

I reckon its always worth trying to haggle down, even if you fail.

OP mentioned it was changed at 70k, so that's fine cambelt schedule for these are 72k, but check the paperwork to ensure it was actually done! I've visited cars that owners claimed had the belt change yet there was no paperwork to prove it and you can't 100% tell by inspection without taking stuff out to check the belt manually.

As said haggle the price always, but dont low ball otherwise they'll think your wasting their time.

So I picked the car up today, guy was a legend and so far I've been impressed by the whole thing. Car was his dads from new, he passed last year and he took on the car, he has since got a new run about from his sister and no longer needs the accord. Car is so clean and spotless it looks and smells almost new, other than the scuff on it's bumper.

Everything works as it should and the engine sounds great, gear box is smooth and it has a book full of dealer service stamps :-)

Not bad for 950 at all.
