Going back to air cooling. What do I buy?

So after using the Corsair H100 for a couple months now, im very underwhelmed by the performance. Had to have it replaced 3 times by ocUK (which im very greatful of) and it still doesn't really work properly. (fan controller is dead)
Temps were nothing to brag about either. 3770k @ 4.5ghz (1.3v) and it reaches up to 90 degrees during prime95.

So i've decided to go back to air cooling, and never bother with those all-in-one watercoolers again.
I have a budget of £35, what air cooler should I get to cool my 3770k @ 4.5?

cheers.

I use a megahelms cooler 1.28 vcore 4.20 CPU 75 my temps are but I'm sure there are better coolers out there now good luck.

I get better temps than that with my h80 and the same CPU at 4.5 with 1.25v. Though my fan controller does appear to be dead too.

Is their a reason why you only want to spend £35 on an air cooler when you spent around £100 on your Corsair H100 ?

If that were me and you can afford it i would go with a Phanteks PH-TC14PE

I only spent £50 on the H100, got a refurbished unit from ocUK. The fan controller doesn't work on it tho, and I've had it replaced twice. So my initial impressions of the AiO water coolers, isnt good to say the least.

Having said that though, it does still work, albiet not as good as I had hoped. I guess I over estimated the ability of these things.
Im debating on just keeping it though, and attempting to lap it to increase its performance. Theres a couple different mods that can be done, from lapping, to custom mounting for increased pressure etc. I may give these a try and see if I get better results from it.

Ok, so i've gone ahead and just replaced the H100 direct from Corsair. Used their advanced RMA service since I have the money right now. Hopefully since the H100 is discontinued now, they will send me something better like an H100i

I have a mildly oc'ed i7-4770k, at 4.2 ghz, cooled by megahalems and single 850rpm fan. Idle temps 27-33, under load mid 40s - mid 50s. Best air cooler I ever had. And one that didn't cut my fingers during instalation :D

Got my replacement H100 yesterday. Works perfectly. It seems ocUK sent me 3 faulty ones, before I got a working one direct from Corsair lol.

Megahelms for me.

Does not obstruct RAM slots, Easy to fit and remove, Great Cooling and looks.

I think Helios has tested both Himalaya and TS140 I suggest the Himalaya because its cheaper and as good as TR140.. maybe a little better.

"B Grade" Alpenfohn Himalaya for £30.00, normally £43.99

Megahalems is a very good cooler but at £50+ it's not cheap and when you add on the expense of fans it becomes quite expensive. £50+ for cooler and another £10-20 each for fans... when top coolers with good fans start around £50 (Alpenfohn K2), £54 (Silver Arrow SB-E Extreme), and top out about £70.. and cool a little better than Megahalems too.

And even though Megahalems clears RAM does not mean fan will fit over RAM and clear side cover. ;)

How will K2 perform with same Scythe GT's?
K2 is cheaper with stock fans than Megahalems is without fans.

How does Megahalems with GT's compare to Silver Arrow SB-E Extreme. SA SB-E E is considerably cheaper than Megahalems with GT's .. not to mention GT's are no longer being made. Does OcUK have any? ;)

Don't get me wrong. I think Megahalem is a very good cooler. Still among the top coolers on the market. It's just that there are other that perform as well or better for less money.

The Himalaya was actually poorer than the Matterhorn I tested if I remember correctly. The TS140, although not on my charts, is much better and comparable to the first gen Archon. So I'd still opt for the TS140.

Spend a bit more and K2 all the way as you say. Not much point comparing a Megahalem to it as the efficiency of the heatsink alone is nothing like the K2. Comparing the same fans on both would also have the K2 pulling far ahead. The Super Mega is a different story thanks to the copper fins they use...

Ive owned both the super mega and k2, akasa vipers on the super mega. 4.2ghz i7 920. 77c max under LinX, 68c max with the k2 and its stock fans, much quieter too. Mega is great though if you have tall ram.
