I've been tasked with finding a laptop for my cousin's 21st. His mum will be buying it. Budget is about £1500, but obviously less is better.

Specs I'm thinking would be required:

17" screen, Nvidia 780m and an SSD

Cheers!

Thanks for the responses guys, the MSI GT70 seems to run slightly over budget but it's certainly a contender.

The build quality does look a bit iffy on the MSI, I could be completely wrong but from the pics it looks a bit flimsy and plastic.

Graphics could be dropped down to 8970m.

A decent laptop with a 780m will probably be on the boarder of your limit, but check out the Asus rog series or the Msi gt70 series, I think Lenovo have a nice set too. I personally would avoid sli due to the reduced battery life and also avoid a card below a 765, they are thinner cards so nicer laptops but performance wise they won't really blow you away (unless sli) meaning an upgrade will be required sooner, but as it is a thin card you'll limit your replacements if you know what I mean. The X7 was a contender for me, gigabyte have decent quality too but I decided to go fatter for a longer lasting laptop - close call though.

Depending on how much "hassle" you want in the order process (as it's your aunt who will do the purchase) you could go for a custom spec of any of the above (and many more) from the US - I saved myself a bundle, got excellent advice all for a price I was very pleased with :)

Good hunting.

Disclaimer: I knew nothing about laptops or the latest tech until this weekend just gone, so I may be wrong about everything... I usually am.

Hey thanks again guys, I'm leaning towards a R290x.

It seems like it offers close to the same performance but a wedge cheaper. However, I can't seem to find any Intel laptops that have 'em.... How much worse are the A10s than i5/i7?

Seems like we're talking £1600 for an i7 with an 780m but £1000 for an A10 R290X. That's quite a big jump.

Alienware do have Intel and 290x options...

£1700 vs £1000 for an A10 from Overclockers.

Is it really £700 better? ... It does look a lot cooler. :P

It's a completely different laptop... the AMD is cheaper for a reason, build quality is lower and performance of the PCU and chipset sucks versus Intel Haswell. You pay for what you get.
