Hi guys, My son recently passed his test (with only 14 minors :p ) and we have been browsing Autotrader ect, and using confused.com to find insurance quotes, but haven't managed to find anything for less than £1000, which I know, is extremely cheap for a new driver. The only alternative I've found is a deal on a new car with a years free insurance, however that works out far more expensive than a nearly new car and a £1000 premium. Is there any way to get a car and insure it in my name, and have others be allowed to drive it ect?

Not looking to do anything illegal, I'm just used to the way car insurance works in the other countries I've lived in which you insure the car, not the driver.

It almost seems like it depends when you're applying, I've been having a look for the last few weekends and nearly identical cars have varied by as much as £1500 more than the cheapest quotes I've found for them.

Thanks for the advice, would it be significantly cheaper to wait a year till he's 19 or is it better to just bite the bullet and start building up some NCB?

Just bite the bullet, 18 vs 19 will make little difference.

I was 22 I think when I passed, first year was £2400 on a Corsa. Age made very little difference, NCB was the only thing that made a significant difference.

A grand is an absolute steal for an 18 year old!! My first year was £2.2k and it wasn't below a grand until the 3rd year!

How can you pass a driving test with FOURTEEN minors? The limit is 15.... aren't you a bit worried? I passed with three minors and I don't think looking back I was very safe.

Years of having passed is more important than NCB.
Hence when I bought my first car at 20 my insurance was £450 instead of £lol, because I passed when I was 17, not just before I bought the car - despite having no NCB.

My god, my insurance was like £2200 when I was 17 so £1000 in this day and age seems like excellent value. What car did you get that quote on, a Daewoo Matiz? :p

I passed with 14 minors, and have never been involved in a fault accident and currently have 13 years NCB and consider myself a safe and considerate driver.

Some people are affected by the nerves more than others. Test results mean next to nothing in some cases IMO

I passed with 4 minors, drove like a boy racer for about 7 years before growing up, had 0 crashes and only lost 3 years NCB due to not having a car for those period of years; And i still think I was not a safe driver.
