A45 AMG Test Drive - First Impressions

Mitsubishi are world leaders with Nissan when it comes to AWD systems in fast cars. Compared to Mercedes who dabbled in a bit of Haldex.
Mercedes have never used Haldex. Haldex is Swedish.

Mercedes 4-Matic, which they have been using since 1987, was designed in conjunction with Steyr.

Oh, and they've been producing the G-Wagen since 1979.
And the Unimog started life in the 1940s, so MB do know a little bit about 4WD...

The haldex was more of a sweeping statement of the fwd based reactive system rather than the brand. Also I am aware of the G Wagens and other 4 matic systems but they are all off road based. This is the first time Mercedes have ever attempted anything sporty with 4wd. The japs have been refining it for decades.

Bwuahahahahah. Absolute rubbish. They have been producing 4wd road cars for decades! You don't do much offroading in an E Class, for example.

Is a 1987 W124 an off-roader?

Really?

I take it the 550bhp E63 4Matic isn't sporty then?

optional extra and lhd only plus is very new as well. Off road based means entirely that. Doesn't have to be a land rover. All those 4wd mercs are for a market where bad weather and poor conditions are needed not the sports characteristics of AWD. Hense my off road comment. Again a sweeping statement that has been mis read.

But predates the A45, just.

Keep moving those goalposts. An E Class is not an off-road vehicle nor is it designed to be used off-road.

The 4wd on a E Class was never intended with sports in mind but rather utility. This is the difference between the Jap systems of the past decades which have gone in a different direction.

Seriously guys

No one can comment which will handle or grip better because of what you read on the Internet or because one manufacturer has being doing it longer than another. Yes the Japs might have more experience and should be better, but the only real way to know is to drive them both. The Mercs suspension, track width, tyre size and all wheel system could be setup in a way that makes it feel RWD and very sporting something only Nissan have really achieved with GTR's as they are RWD until otherwise needed.

Let's wait for the owner to take delivery, he had a Scoob, let's see how someone who has owned them thinks as he is in a far better position to comment.

Once the 911 is back on the road I shall try and convince Mercedes to give me an A45 AMG for a weekend as I want to see how it compares to my EVO X which was a superb road car and was not full of understeer like most 4WD stuff, well not when you disabled the electronic stuff. :)

The A45 AMG may be labelled 4Matic but it does use a Haldex clutch.

I thought those cars were RWD until they needed to transfer power to the front, certainly the R8?

The GTR and 911 Turbo's are certainly RWD biased, hence them still being quite fun to drive and not as dull as your typically AWD or Haldex AWD/FWD biased cars.

The 991 Turbo is Haldex AWD though.

Haldex seems to install people with a sense of application? They make loads of stuff, guess its just a VAGism.... just not that exciting :P
