Accident Management Companies

I don't think that the police should be plugging a specific accident management company because of sponsorship. But if a policeman wants to (of his own free will) say to the innocent party "BTW you might want to given one of the accident management companies a try as your insurance company won't play ball" then that's fine as it's the policeman's own opinion...

Isnt that even worse as it opens up the possibility of individuals getting backhanders?

Because only the Force as a whole should get one? It strikes me as no more or less acceptable for individual feds than it is for a Force. The problem is that people who are still traumatised after an accident will assume this is some sort of impartial advice, not a sponsored endorsement. Even if the police handing it over says some prepared statement I doubt it will sink in in many cases.

No, absolutely a bad idea. And very bad PR. Such companies are about half a step up from ambulance-chasing lawyers, and the police will be dragged down to that level.

So I think we can all agree that this industry adds a fair bit of cost to our insurance premiums. They seem to be a symptom of the fact insurance companies often have pretty poor customer service and that's where they've found their customer base, but make a small fortune for themselves as a result.

I think, that as you've mentioned while they push costs up, they have their place due to the fact that basically your insurance company often will not act in your best interest, but instead take the easy route to save themselves money.

However:

So what would you say if you crashed and got given a pack from an accident management company given to you by the attending Police Officer? Do you think that's ethical?

I think this is ridiculous.

An impartial info pack stating the steps you need to take would be useful, but an advertising pack from a private company? I think that's out of order. The police are supposed to be neutral, not selling themselves to the highest bidder!

What next? Every time you stop a motorist for having overly worn tyres they also get a flyer for Mytyres or Blackcircle? Or having a bulb out means Halfords get a referal? It's totally wrong in my opinion.
