Just found this on another site a guy called chomba posted it up, thought Three customers might like to read it (the interesting part is at the end). I have not been able to verify it as yet though.

"The cost of calling 0800 numbers from mobile phones will be made free for customers of Three from Tuesday, while charges for helplines run by hundreds of banks, utilities, insurance companies and broadband providers will be slashed.

Mobile networks make an estimated £600m a year by charging their customers up to 40p a minute to ring numbers which begin with the digits 08, and which are often free or a fraction of the price to ring from landlines, according to research from YouGov.

Britain's smallest operator Three, with 9 million customers, has abolished charges for 0800 numbers for all customers and cut the cost of any other number beginning with 08 and 05 to 5p a minute. The tariff will apply to all new contracts, and existing customers can sign up without having to extend their existing contracts.
To summarise our new 24 month Pay Monthly plans;

ktf
• Free 0800, 0808 and 0500 numbers
• 84* and 087* numbers just 5p per minute
• Texts alerts when you’re nearing your limit
• The ability to place spending caps
• Personal Hotspot functionality for all, but limited to 2GB if your plan includes All-You-Can-Eat data
• All-You-Can-Eat text messages
• A range of data allowances up to All-You-Can-Eat
• A range of minute allowances up to All-You-Can-Eat

chomba (interesting bit)
Just spoke to 3 customer services and existing One Plan customers who want to sign up to the free 0800 calls will have their tethering capped at 2gb per month. I will not sign up under those terms but heat added. Tethering rights will not be affected if you don't sign up."

IF YOU ARE ON ONE PLAN AND TETHER OVER 2GB BE CAREFUL, IT'S FREE 0800 OR UNLIMITED TETHERING.

I very rarely tether but I assume once my contract is up (next year), I will be forced onto this if I want to renew?

You shouldn't be if you just leave it as a rolling contract as you'll still be on the original terms but if you take a new contract then yes.

Well i don't really tether as much. Maybe about 500mb per month if that tbh.
But the idea having unlimited tethering is far better. 0800 numbers you can ring from home, no big deal. Or get the 0800 app from App store.

Just seen this again on Techradar, so its real. From what I understand if you leave your existing contract rolling you still get to keep unlimited tether. re 0800 number, as said above, Skype is the answer.

I've got Virgin Media's smart call app on my phone so I can use that to call 0800 numbers on the rare occasion I can't find an alternative geographical number.

Glad I got in before the change.
I don't know why you're calling it cheeky? As it only affects new customers, who will know the terms.

One Plan is still there, but is now sim-only deal.... no longer available with a phone.

Think it's still got the new 2GB tether limit though, which is a little bit useless to me. Looks like I'll have to keep paying come "upgrade" time in August, as I can thrash the tethering and 2GB will only get me through a day or three I reckon. Ho hum.

That sucks!!! I was relying on 3 to have it for when I upgrade at the end of the year :(

Around the middle of 2015, OFCOM have stipulated that 0800 numbers will be free from mobiles anyway, therefore I think Three are doing this as a first mover advantage thing.

I managed to bag the One Plan at £15/mo and I buy my handsets outright (currently have the Nexus 5). So if I just sit tight, I'll get the 0800 free during 2015 and manage to keep the unlimited tethering. Until then, I can use saynoto0870.

Just get the 0800 wizard app from App Store. I always use that when i need to ring a 0800 number when I'm out and about. But of course having 0800 completely free without the hassle is a nice idea.

I'll keep my unlimited tethering.

2gb of tethering is ample for me and the ability to cheaply ring 08 or 05 is handy so I might ring 3 and change to the new terms.

another cheeky thing they did

i signed up for three one plan @ £20 last week (12 month sim) online

got the intro letter in the post today and it says my monthly bill will be £25 - wtf

just called them and they confirmed i will pay £25 per month, so told them this was a mistake as it doesn't say anywhere on their site that one plan is £25! and they said there was a "System error" and this has been fixed now to £20

swines! so far my move to 3 isn't going too well lol

good job i checked the letter!

Three now understand that a cap on tethering is a must. Existing customers have till the end of their contract until the tethering cap will affect them upgrade or no upgrade. Three want to put a tethering cap on existing customers before their contract ends but just might put a hold on that to gain merit."

Might be forced on to us.
