The £1 coin is to be replaced by a new model based on the old threepenny bit, George Osborne will announce in the Budget.
The Chancellor will say that the current coin, which has been in circulation for 30 years, is no longer suitable for use because it has become vulnerable to sophisticated counterfeiters.
The Government expects the new coin to be introduced in 2017.

Iv seen a few dodgy ones in the past, scrape a knife over it and you will tell the difference

New one looks cool though

I was looking at some of those old threepenny bits the other day and remembering how awesome they were.

I, for one, welcome our new threepenny bit pound coin overlords.

Cue Daily Mail scare stories about people saving years of change in oversized whiskey bottles suddenly finding their money worthless.

I think his estimation of 45 million fake pound coins is very conservative, based on how many i come across as just one person in this country i think there are far more!

I'm curious about how much of an impact this sort of thing has on other businesses, things like shoppig trollys that require £1 to release, vending machines, pool tables, arcade games etc?

£2 coins weren't introduced too long ago (relatively) and other coins have changed size at least in nthe last 20 years or so, 5p. 10p, 50p that I can remember.
Should be interesting to see the change though.

I *just* remember the introduction of the first pound coin. I'm quite looking forward to the next.

I'd imagine the same circumference and weight, shouldnt cause too much issues.

I remember being young (really young) and taping two pennies together and putting them in machines to get free sweets! (obviously the same weight or similar)

Can't say I've ever seen any fake coins to my knowledge! Seen fake notes a couple of times though.
*goes and checks my wallet*

Interesting looking coin though, never seen a three pence piece before!

I used to do that with BT phone boxes. Needed to use bacofoil or fag paper foil for it to work though.
