A45 AMG Test Drive - First Impressions

Nasty bland MPV hatch with a derivative powertrain, off the shelf turbo and awd bolted on to it, all for 45k, then spend the next few years in the garage on a weekly basis getting it fixed. Sounds appealing.

You do know that AMG built the engine right not some random tuner?

err so? At the end of the day it's a regular architecture, FWD hatch, 2.0 engine, bolt on turbo, electronically aided everything and a AWD system to force it to grip and use the power. What's so special about it that it justifies 45k and a 20k extra over other rivals who produce better cars? Speed and power isn't everything, it's all economics, Merc are just trying to cash in by making an AMG car that they can sell by more numbers, in reality its not worth anything near 45k.

Jethro Bovingdon lapped Angelsey a few seconds faster in my Evo IX compared to a A45 AMG press car.

I also drove the A45 AMG, not for me. I much preferred the M135i I drove a few months ago.

In which market is a Renault Megane a Mercedes-Benz rival?

Are you going to tell us that an Omega is overpriced because a Casio is cheaper next?

The likes of Megane 265, Astra VXR, Focus ST, Golf GTI, Leon Cupra are all around the 25k mark last time I looked.

You might want to go and check again as the Leon Cupra and Golf GTI or even R are not 20K cheaper and not comparable performance wise unless they have suddenly gained 100 BHP...

The Merc claims to be a hot hatch doesn't it? Those are all hot hatches, in what way is the dinky Merc hatch better that it justifies a whopping 45k? Please don't tell me power, because power isn't everything, and having a Merc badge means nowt all.

No it claims to be an AMG Merc based on the A Class or CLA platforms...and its 45K if you drop the options list on it.

So is an E Class.overpriced because the Mondeo is much cheaper?

All your opinion of course.
If more power and a high end badge isn't your thing then stick to Renaults, Vauxhalls and Fords. All lesser cars for less cash.

Lesser cars in what way? Again how is the Merc worth its list price? Take away the badges and I think some people will start looking at them all in a different way.

Go sit in a Mercedes and then a Renault, the difference will be obvious straight away. If you disagree then you're very much in the minority.

I had the misfortune of being a passenger in a newish Renault Megane. I flipped the sun visor down and the vanity mirror fell out into my lap. The door grab handle was also coming apart. Common faults across the range it seems, quality right there :p

The Mercedes will be in the garage half the time getting fixed though, the build quality on new Renaults is pretty good especially compared to the past, Mercs do not have great build quality either, I've been in quite a few rattly ones that are only few years old and they are nothing special, they are certainly not the same high standard as they were in the 80's and haven't been for along while.

Having been in both, the interior of the Merc does seem to be better. The current Megane seems to be screwed together well, but the materials used on the centre console seem a bit cheap to touch, and it is a sea of grey!

For sure the quality gap is closer than it once was.
Rattles can happen for any number of reasons, in my BMW the rear parcel shelf knocks over bumps and makes an annoying noise. The interior isn't falling apart though.

Also, you tend to find the painted silver plastic metal effect trim consoles in Fords, Vauxhalls, Renaults etc.. is actually real metal in German cars. The leather on the steering wheel doesn't melt as it does on all Fords I've driven.

My impressions were that it had a fidgety ride which is way too harsh for UK roads. It also felt pretty dull to drive to me, very capable and quick car but just not interesting enough for my liking.
