As the title suggests, I am looking for a relatively inexpensive (couple of hundred £'s) amp and 5.1 speakers that has at least 2 HDMI inputs. I have been using the crappy speakers on my TV for the past 18 months and want to sort it out! Sky HD box and RaspberryPi XBMC will be connected to it.

I know my budget won't get me much but perhaps there is something out there for me? I am lazy and haven't googled anything yet :p

cheers all!

If you can get to a Richer Sounds store, then this will be ideal, and is a fantastic price. If you can't, then I'm not sure there is anything else for £200 that is worth buying. There are other choices, but most seem to be around £300+ from other sites. Avoid those all in one DVD based systems. They may be cheap, but they are not the answer, as you'll only wish you bought a proper AV receiver system somewhere down the road.

i would buy a surround sound set and use SPIDIF cable to get all sound including normal tv to go out the system as apposed to connecting particular devices to the sounds system.

I suspect your tv support it but check it has a SPIDIF port

My god that looks like a mega deal! I am actually going to Brighton on Saturday too so could take a look see if they have it in stock :). That is exactly the sort of thing I am looking for - cheers.

Leigh boy! My TV has optical SPDIF out but only in stereo... which is lame.

I got your emails yesterday btw too :)

You'd be doing it wrong in that case, the whole point of an AV receiver is that you feed all your sources to it. You also won't get certain audio formats such as DTS-HD via optical.

ARC will take care of the TV audio (e.g. Freeview) if required, but everything should be connected directly to the receiver.

That Yamaha system is a very good price. Bought my Dad an older version a couple of years back (v196 I think), and paid around £180 as it was end of line. Great little system for the price. Only downfall is that it wouldn't really be a good system IMO if you want to gradually upgrade it.

I've got that exact setup from richer sounds and it's ruddy superb for the cash. Music sounds excellent on it as well, just beware of the fact that I got absolutely no instructions with the amp at all and by all accounts I'm not alone.

Ok cheers for the responses guys - seems well recommended and I have had 2 yamaha av amps before which were very impressive. I wont be gradually upgrading this system, I already have a Denon amp with 2.1 Mission speakers for my music which I am more than happy with :)

I called richer sounds - no stock of the Yamaha and nothing in the warehouse so the can't even order it in. They have a Pioneer HTP072 in stock @ £250

The pioneer system looks not bad - reviews are generally good. Amp looks cheaper and less connections on the back - what do you guys think?
