Looking to order a 13in MBA for my Mum for Mothers Day.

Looking at Mac Rumours it suggest an update is due soon.

Worth waiting or should I just buy now? I know with Apple you can go in this cycle forever but thought I'd ask.

For reference it will be used for interest use and little else and will be replacing an aged Toshiba laptop.

Convince me thats its ok to order now guys! :p

You're replacing an old Toshiba with a £900 machine with a different OS...

Buy a cheap windows machine, your mum will be happier and you will save £500.

She already uses my MBA and my sisters MBP.

I'm not going down the PC vs Mac debate - We've already decided we are getting her a Mac.

I'm not starting a debate, chill winston...

You never said that your mother was already using OSX... and don't buy direct, you will never get it before mothers day!!

Sorry didnt mean to come across as moody. Late night in the library taking its toll.

Buying from the HE store. If it doesnt come exactly on time its no biggie. :)

The only thing I'd say is that if you wait for the Back To School sale to pop up, last year the offer was a £70 App Store/iTunes Gift Card. Otherwise, you might as well buy now.

True :) - Its just they arent normally until the Summer and we'd like to get her something now.

I recently bought an 11" 2013 MBA, 4Gb RAM, 256GB SSD, i5. The reason I got it now was because I was in the US and it was considerably cheaper there even after state sales tax. I would have gone for the 8Gb model had they had it in stock but this spec does everything I need it to do easily as my main computer as I have a workstation for heavy processing at work. Since a possible refresh is not round the corner (some months to go), just go for it if you need it now.

News on mac rumours that there is an update to 12" coming

Puts me in an interesting position. I've got a 2011 air and I'm coming to the end of my time as a student... temptation to upgrade is high if they go to retina displays

Doesn't make super sense too me, unless its a very different machine, cause if it is just a retina air then its basically a 13" rMBP with a slightly smaller screen. It could be some sort of hybrid machine, maybe it has both OSX and iOS on it or something.

Either way it seems to be something completely new so I think it is safe to get a 13" Air now, if you want a retina display theres the 13" rMBP which is basically an Air with a smaller chassis but unified thickness for battery.

Want to ask the same but with different back story.

My wife currently has a late 2010 Mac Book Pro, last of the core2duo model. She now wants a new one after my brother came round with his new i5 version. She says it is quicker and runs better.
Any how, her birthday is at the end of April so I was thinking of getting her a new Mac Book Pro with Retina display. She does a lot of photo editing, the higher pixel screen would be a nice surprise.

Is it worth buying now or wait till June July for the update. I'm thinking going from a core2duo to an i5 will be a massive leap so waiting a while longer wont give any thing more advanced or worth while waiting for, comparing the jump to i5.

Also gets the birthday sorted and I wont have to fork out again in 2 months if I buy her something for her birthday that's not a Mac. The Mac will happen I just want to know if I should buy now of wait.

Waiting a couple of months more will, in theory, make for a machine that is supported for longer. So at this point I'd definitely look at waiting unless the machine is required urgently.

I would buy now, outside of the new 12" retina air thin that is vapourware at this point there is nothing interesting at all coming from Apple. The next big thing for the rMBP will be Maxwell graphics that is only for the 15" and Intel broadwell which is dude at the start of 2015. Unless your going to wait for the new CPU I would buy today, no point spending on SSD and RAM I think unless you intend to keep the machine for a few more years.
