I was thoroughly owned last night...

It is about like tying your shoelaces, in that you push the loop through the back not a loose end. As far as orientation is concerned I always feel like I have to turn it the opposite way to that which feels natural. If you do it slowly in the mirror you should be able to work out the orientation while you're tying it.

And the key to tightening it is to gently pull opposite 'wings' (front left with back right & vice versa) until it looks neat & tidy.

I've only ever worn a bow tie twice, for a Cambridge may ball and my graduation. May ball = clip on, because I was too drunk to fathom them, even hours before it started. Graduation, I started practising two days beforehand, and just about managed it. I couldn't do it now though, I'm never anywhere fancy enough to require them anyway :p

Bow ties are awesome, but you need to learn to tie one. Clip ons have no shape.

Windsor knots are really something you should have got nailed back at school!

lolwat? I wear a Half Windsor every day, it's as simple as taking a wiz! :p

I know how to but more often than not it ends up lopsided like a single knot but nowhere near as bad. After a few attempts and minutes fiddling with it in a mirror I can get looking good. Whereas a Windsor I can tie with my eyes closed and it's perfect.

What sort of school did you go to!? Mine was just happy you were wearing a tie nevermind what knot you were using.

Agree a 'full' Windsor is easy, a half windsor however is the devils work. There is just no way to do it without the knot being lopsided

I'm the exact opposite, I can do a half windsor easy peasy and I do every working day but the full windsor always comes out either too short or too long :/

Yeah every time I wear one I have to re-learn how to tie it.
Then after getting it down I have to practice so it doesn't look like I did it in the dark with my elbows.
