Ok, so for a year now I've had a powercolor HD 6950 2GB installed in my rig, its been an amazing card, quite rare, good specs, strong card, but recently I've been looking over as many results from other people as possible, the general score for tests and results:
highest result I found for the powercolor HD 6950 2GB on 3Dmark 11 was a score of 5730, now I presume the card had been overclocked as the basic score for the card is 4400 on 3Dmark 11, I looked over these results and I thought I could do one better
So powered down, opened the case and cleaned everything off, checked for any signs or ware or damage, all ok, so shut the case up, powered on and began the long road to victory
I loaded up MSI afterburner and played with some of the settings, not touching the voltage yet, couple of tweaks, little raise on core and memory clock, ran 3Dmark 11, here's the first set of results, ignore the cpu as I was also overclocking at the same time, all different results
So a little bit of an overclock, not to bad, shows the card is working and there's no damage or faults
little by little I turned up the clock on the card, still no voltage tweaks:
looking good
Ok, so what I believe to have done is almost beaten the highest score I could find, so no gloating yet
Now decided to play with the voltage, little tweaks here and there to see what happens as well as increasing the memory and base clock
:
WOW! zoomed up just because I changed the voltage a little bit
I'm impressed!
But still not over the moon as I knew I had more to go on the card, so again, little bit more? :
Ok now im happy! over the 6000 mark, very impressed
as I still cant find another 6950 with the same result.
I was going to stop there but I then remembered that the card had a duel bios!!! so an hours research, looked over what cards work, mine was down as a successful card that could be made into a 6970
so off I went! drivers downloaded, little switch by the crossfire connectors flicked on to the number "2" mark, all was successful, shaders unlocked and all ready to go for the Secord stage of overclocking!
again, voltage tweak and raise in core clock and memory clock:
Good good, still rising with good results, but not stopping there, all temps are ok, just reaching 72.C on test
Little bit more:
Haha ok so that looked like enough, but nope, I was at maximum on core clock and the memory clock, so really the only other thing I could tweak was the voltage
So off I went
tweaking the voltage for the last time :
DAYM! that's impressive, for the card that is, great score and amazing temperature, 34.C on idle, low fan noise for duel fans, only 75.C on max, I'm really happy with the results, quick look at MSI afterburner to show what settings I had the card on:
There we have it, Powercolor HD 6950 2GB pushed to the edge
very impressed with the results!
If anyone else has the same card or a 6950, then please post your results as I'm very interested in what other people can get, I'm happy
thanks
