Hi guys,

Did anybody else see this show the other day? I thought it was great until I heard about them putting down dogs because there was simply not enough space at the kennels  does anybody else think this is abit extreme? I mean couldn't they just build another Kennel or move the dogs? It's like killing people because there is not enough space in hospitals

I missed it. But as for building more kennels... with what money? The dogs don't earn a wage to feed or house themselves and they can't get a job that provides medical and dental plans either. Keeping a dog costs money.

To be honest there is ZERO suffering for a dog when it is put to sleep.

Why they keep the dogs past 7 days is beyond me.

7th day, slap up meal and go to sleep.

Welcome to America, lower tax and less given to charity means no money to look after stray dogs. A worse education system and less evenly spread wealth means worse owners which results in this situation.

The mrs and I watched it. As once-upon-a-time dog owners it was really quite sad and difficult to watch at times.
The documentary also reaffirmed what a cr@p hole LA is.

It's like killing people

No it isn't.

Housing the dogs will just exacerbate the problem, what will they do with them once they are in the kennel? They clearly aren't going to get adopted are they, you can't expect tax payers to want their money going towards housing hundreds of dogs until they die of natural causes for literally no reason, especially considering their lives would be utterly miserable. Also I cant see many charities thinking that would be the best way to spend donors money.

They need to deal with breeders/sellers, but also just educate people better.

Really good documentary though, Louis Theroux is brilliant.

What do you think happens in this country? Even the RSPCA put down healthy dogs because their kennels are full :(

I didn't see it as my jack russells won't tolerate other dogs on telly (which is either very clever or very stupid, I haven't decided yet)

The rscpa have been doing a similar thing for years.

Yeah I did watch it. It's just the same in this country. Why so surprised? There isn't the money or interest in creating more kennels. Lack of space = dead dogs.

South Central certainly is.

It showed the lack of understanding about dog ownership that a lot of people have. I'm sure it's a similar problem over here, what with the number of dogs taken in by the numerous animal charities that we have.

What was also interesting was seeing the owners of some of those dogs. You always hear the phrase "only in America", and whilst it's not specifically true, I certainly haven't met as diverse a range of bizarre and crazy people as the Americans.

They were getting 20 dogs a day some days, how can you expect them to do anything else OP. Would you rather they were jammed up together in a cage to live out a horrible life?

What needs to change is the demand for dogs from people who cannot look after them. The kennel was doing the best it could.

it was very sad at times, but you can understand why they have to do it.

what was amazing was how that "dog whisperer" bloke changed that white German Shepard from completely manic and dangerous to a completely different dog within about 20 seconds. was incredible to watch!
