Hi guys,

About two and a half years ago I got an MSI HD6850 from OcUK (this one). Apart from some trouble at the start (see later) it has worked fine and I've never tried overclocking it. I'm fairly sure no system changes (drivers etc.) were made before these problems started.

A couple of weeks ago my system crashed/rebooted a couple of times for no apparent reason, and since then the card seems to have dropped significantly in performance. Even around Windows there can be a bit of stutter and the stutter is horrendous in pretty much any game. MSI Afterburner and GPUZ both show the card has high GPU % use during basic tasks (65%+ constantly just watching a YouTube video), although the temperature seems OK (maxes out at about 55°C). Before these problems started I ran it through 3DMark 11 and the GPU score was about 3400, now I'm getting scores in the ~400 region. 3DMark Firestrike bench scores are about 350. The CPU scores are pretty much the same as before, and apart from some stutter I'm not getting any graphical defects.

Seeing as the CPU scores haven't changed and I've not noticed non-graphics issues I'm pretty sure it's a GPU problem, but I'm not sure what. So far I've tried:

  • Reseating the card/ checking cables.
  • Updating to the latest release drivers.
  • Updating to the latest Beta driver.
  • Rolling back to the driver installed when the card worked fine and was 3DMark 11 benched.
  • Complete format and Windows 7 reinstall.
  • Flashing the latest BIOS for the card.

All of the driver reinstalls were done with a Driver Uninstaller run before the new driver was installed. So far none of this has fixed it.

I have an old HD4770 which runs fine in the same slot, although it doesn't seem to like the newer drivers (acts like no driver is installed). The strangest thing is that when I first bought this card I had an almost identical problem (thread here). I couldn't fix it then either so I RMA'd it to OcUK, who tested it and sent it back with a note saying it was fine. Sure enough I plugged it into my machine and it worked beautifully.

So, I'm not sure if the issue is the card itself or the drivers. Last time this happened OcUK said the card was fine, but I've done every driver-related thing I can think of and still no joy plus the HD4770 seems OK.

Right now I've run out of ideas for fixing it. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Rest of specs:
Phenom II X3 720 @ 3.3GHz
Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UD4P
8GB RAM
Corsair RM650

Yeah, I know these specs are a bit haphazard, but I've been plotting an overhaul "In the next few months" for about a year an a half. I'll get around to it someday.

Have you tried adding +20 to the power on MSI AB? I know my 6970 was a pig and needed this adding for it to work properly.

Thanks for the suggestion, just tried it and unfortunately that didn't fix it. I tried getting rid of the factory overclock as well and that didn't work either.

It's damn frustrating being stuck on my HD4770 now. :-/
