Unique Christening ideas.

My wife had her 2 boys Christened as her family are Catholic, but she's not practicing, just says she is a Catholic... anyway, with our daughter due in July she was talking about a Christening "because the others had been" which caused a bit of an argument as I didn't think that was right if I didn't believe in it, why would I want it?

Cool story bro. Yep.

Frightening how in the age of global travel and the internet people can be so narrow minded and fixated on these things.

Do we really need to bash someone for their personal choice of religion?

Sounds like a really nice idea, I would try to provide photos that are around right now but will be gone that many years down the line. It could be of family members/the local area that are likely to get lost or be gone by then.

I still remember my Grandma fondly from being a wee boy but there are very few if any photos of her around.

I commend your idea.

It's not their personal choice of religion though. It's forcing a religion onto someone else who doesn't know any better and doesn't have the information or decision making ability to make the choice for themselves.

The child isn't being forced into anything. I am sure they will be free to make their own mind up when they are older.

Christening doesn't harm anyone, and is entirely reversible, it's not circumcision!

Iirc if you are not christened, you cannot go to heaven and will be stuck in purgatory. If the parents believe that then there is no no harm in getting their child christened. Besides which they tend to be a happy family celebration.

I was christened, I am now an atheist and I don't think it did me any harm. I enjoyed going to the christenings of my younger siblings and cousins.

How about a presentation pack of stamps?

Actually that's probably a really good idea. As well as being something that's definitely 'of the now', if he gets stamps which are just marked 1st class rather than with a value, they'll probably appreciate in value quite dramatically in 18 years.

Yeah, you're right - the kid'll probably be scarred by having a bit of water dripped on his head.

Why are some atheists just as evangelical about it as some religious people? Surely their whole stance is that being that way is the problem? Live and let live.

Religion does a lot of damage within our society, some good but a lot of damage, more to the point people get all high and mighty about problems throughout the world.

"I'm praying for the kids in africa" and if you actually gave a **** you'd do something about it, but it's ok right? Because you went to church on a sunday and gave them 50p to sit on your knees and listen to an old pedo prattle on about something 2000 year old men thought up as the moral ****ing compass for the world.

People think that by being Christian and praying they don't have to be a good person because "Well, I asked god, I can do no more" and that kind of thinking is what makes the world such a desolate hole.

Clearly you have come across some real scum who claim to be Christians but that doesn't mean we should tar them all with the same brush.

There will always be lazy / selfish / evil people regardless of religion or not but the work I have seen done with organisations such as Compassion or Humanitas or people actively traveling out to Greece to work with the A21 Campaign fighting against slavery and sex trafficking and trying to bring morality back to society is truely inspiring to me.

I couldn't do it, I have other things that I am involved in that don't involve 50p and prayer but thank you God / Allah / human decency for those that do.

I fully support the child's right to walk away from any religion once it is old enough to make its own decisions but I don't blame someone for trying to install a moral compass from a young age.

It really isn't about being brainwashed, it's about being the best that we can be in life and trying to pass that on to future generations.

EDIT -

If it was financially viable, actually sponsoring the life of another child in a 3rd world country.

How amazing would that be to see that child as a young adult as result of what you hold in your hands.

Because those of us that aren't atheists need to be reminded of how delusional we are. :( It's a shame people cannot just accept people have different beliefs to others without having to make the point ad nauseam. Or go out of their way to be offensive just to prove a point.

It's a shame, and I feel sorry for them and I don't let it offend or hurt me, because I know deep down they don't mean to cause offence and are just bad at expressing how they feel.

Agressive Atheism

Have a read through any religious threads here. It's the norm.

A typical thread to do with religion goes like:

Religious Person A: Hey I'm religious. We should be nice to each other and stuff.
Atheist Person B: ZOMG RELIGIONZ HOW CAN YOUZ BE SO THICKS. ONLY IDIOTZ HAVE RELIGIONZ LOLOL.
Religious Person A: You have you're opinion, and I have mine. I respect that. God gave us free will to believe what we want.
Atheist Person B: ZOMG RELIGIONZ HOW CAN YOUZ BE SO THICKS. YOUZ ARE BRAINWASHINGS THE MASSES.
Religious Person A: Dude I'm not trying to convert you. Believe what you want. I'm cool with that.
Atheist Person B: ZOMG YOUZ IS THE STUPIDS FOR HAVING THE RELIGIONS. YOUZ SHUD STOP BEING RELIGIONZ. RELIGIONZ SUCKS. RELIGIONZ SHUDS BE BANNED BCOZ THEY WONT STOP TRYING TO CONVERT EVERYONES.
