Dark Souls II Gameplay Tips and Spoiler Thread

Anyone tried the twinblades yet? I've got the Dragonrider Twinblade, and even though the base stats don't look too impressive, it hits quickly and often and can take enemies out quickly. As it hits so fast, it's an ideal weapon to add Poison or Bleeding too (I went for poison). Seemed fairly useful in PvP as well, as the poison buildup will take opponents by surprise (and when they retreat to heal, they get a Great Lightning Spear to the face).

I have one in my inventory but not tried it yet! Sound pretty unique!

Did the boss in brightstone cove last night and noticed something after the fight, maybe spoilerie not really though but

when i picked up the great soul it left a blue light on the ground where the stone was sat, so i continued and reached the bonfire killing the 2 others on the way

Later i returned to the boss room and there is now a massive rock or crystal where the blue light was and when you interact with it, it says 'Alas, nothing happens' (or something) wonder what that is?

Is anyone else just randomly warping from one place to another to progress and then before finishing going elsewhere? For example, I got to brightstone cove (beating the so-called bosses in that church), but then remembered I hadn't finished up in Belfry Luna (still haven't), but then opened up the way to Huntsmans Copse by getting a pardon for attacking Licia and got to the Chariot boss before turning round and trying another area.

It's got to the point where I've opened up lots of parts of the game I've not finished and can't remember where I've been without looking at the bonfires available :D

I think you need an item you'll get later on. I got that same message when trying to interact with an old giant early in the game, and I can only imagine something we get late in the game will activate them.

Yeah, I've done that a few times. I'm sure there is a "best" path through the game, but I like exploring and then going back if I find an item I think will be useful somewhere else (like a Petrified Branch of Yore). I'll figure out the optimal route another time, I'm just enjoying playing it at the moment :)

That reminds me - one thing I've not found yet are any real shortcuts. In Dark Souls, if you took the Master Key you could bypass a couple of levels and do things early, but I've not really found anything like that yet. I wonder if From have done that intentionally to stop people abusing the shortcuts to get too powerful too early in the game. I know I've done it myself in the past (I remember having a fully upgraded Ascended Pyromancy Glove and all Pyromancies while still SL1), and they've put other methods in place to stop people from being overpowered when they invade other players.

Ooh I forgot I'd been there too (Black Gulch?) and couldn't beat the boss on my own. Helped someone else do it though but still have to beat him myself yet, so again went elsewhere. Love how you can do this.

The level design in Dark Souls 2 seems a lot more tree branch style than Dark Souls' unlocking new areas SOTN style approach.

That's why there's a lot of one way paths in DkS2 where once you go beyond a point, you cannot return. It's why the teleporting from the bonfire is included right at the beginning.

I'm not sure if it's better or worse yet - but it definitely allows the level designers to be a bit more creative - they don't have to worry about how the levels fit in with the game as a whole.

in dragelic castle, after the central bonfire, the room with the statues, my understanding is that you kill the little ones, then the giant comes to life, kill him then you can move on?

my giant doesn't do anything and I see no other path to progress - can anyone confirm this? cheers

I like the tree branching style of areas however i also loved dark souls 1 for the way most of the world connected and looped back around, finding a new shortcut used to feel great! However eventually darksouls had a branch style too anor londo, new londo, tomb of giants and dukes

The room with six doors or the smaller room with 6-7 stone soliders? The first you need to kill the small soldiers near the door to open them. The second you need to kill one near the giant.

Productive evening. The Rotten, Spider thingy and Gargoyles all down. Any tips on the headless bint in the poison pool? Can't even get near her, even with a summon in tow :/

Burn the windmill near the bonfire if you haven't, it lowers the poison. Otherwise it's an easy fight IMO.

I don't know if it's the best, but I think Bandit would be worth a go. That's what I started with as you start with a decent weapon and a short bow, ideal for picking enemies off at range which will be very useful.

bandit didn't work out to well for me. Persevered for about 3 hours with it, then binned it and just started a warrior.

Got further in half the time with a warrior and actually enjoying it now.

Yeah, the level design is a lot more like Demons Souls IMO, contained areas with a relatively linear path through it (though in a number of levels you can open up shortcuts later in the level to make returning to bonfires etc easier).

Like you, I'm not sure if it's better or worse than Dark Souls in that respect, but I am loving the variety in the world so far.

I finally managed to start this last night after having to wait a week and a half.

Think I played about 5-6 hours in total yesterday and have finished up what I perseave to be the 1st 4 boss fights. (Iron Giant, Pursuer, Dragonrider, Old Dragonslayer). All of them were pretty easy but I've still had about 10 deaths so far.

In typical DS fashion, most of my deaths were while trying to 'hurry up' or 'rush' to a certain point.
Funny how you can take out 30 normal enemies without getting hit once, but as soon as you try to rush through, 1 hollowed undead kills you...lol

Thoroughly enjoying the game so far. The level design has been great, I'm not experiencing any slowdown, frame rate issues, glitches etc.
Tried the online summoning/being summoned and it worked quickly and effectively. You seem to have more freedom too compared to DS1. I had killed the boss, but could still summon players because there was another boss elsewhere. I found usmmoning in DS1 to be really irritating.

Think I'm at the start of No-Mans Warf now which seems to be the next logical area to explore.

A few parts have been a bit cheap, but I can usually survive them long enough to escape, rest and return ready for them next time.
Only lost significant souls twice (20,000) but because summoning seems to work a lot better you can get them back really quickly.

Also finding that I have LOADS of human effigy's. I've used about 6, yet still have about 12 of them left - no idea where I keep getting them.

Sitting at work now desperate to go home and play....I live just a few mins away and nobody would know if I left...sooooooooo tempting!!! lol

EDIT: I went home and got myself through No-Mans Warf. Probably the easiest area in a Souls game yet. enemies barely did any damage, were really weak and the boss was useless.
Was a nice break!!

Went to Bastille next and got to the boss room easily without really getting hit, killed the first boss enemy then failed a roll to avoid a swipe and got killed. No-Mans Warf and Bastille enemies are so damn easy so doesn't prepare you well for that boss fight!!!!
Will try again later

I have to say I'm enjoying this thoroughly, the only annoying bit I've found is being summoned into someone else's world and then all they did was hide behind a load of enemies - bloody coward

Were you summoned to help him? If I'm summoned to help someone, I don't mind if they hang back. After all, if they die, I get sent home with nothing. I'll happily put myself in harms way first, especially against the area boss (and even more so if I know how to beat him).
