Iv searched the forums but cannot find any opinions of what would be the best buy.

I can get the msi 770 for 240£ or the HIs 280x for 229£.

Mainly for games at 1080p on an i5 4670k @ 4.4

many thanks

280X just makes more sense, unless you want a specific Nvidia feature such as Physx or or intend to buy a Gsync capable monitor, then get a 770. Otherwise the 280X is faster, will (probably) overclock better, has voltage control, has more memory, has a wider bit bus, is cheaper. #kerching

Mos the benchmarks or vs such as anandtech always show the 770 as faster and cooler but i was leaning to the 280x. Are HIS a decent make?

Anandtech used a slow 280X with a stock core clock of 1000mhz, they're usually faster than that, check ocuks range. Most start out at 1030mhz or higher. Regardless looks even, maybe even the 280X pipping it tbh.

You forgot 384Bit Bus and Mantle for BF4 and Thief. :D

280X, its a no-brainer...:)

TBH the aftermarket 290's regularly hit £300 on OCuk offers, would wait it out for one of those if you want to splash another £50 for some insane power. If not a 280x would be my first choice.

A few months ago I would have said Nvidia straight away as that was all I knew :o After being on the verge of buying a 770 .. I had it in basket and everything then backed out on the pay screen  I just didn't know what to buy .. a 770, a 280x or a 290/290x ...

Very happy with the 290 so I would say either save a bit more cash and get one of those or get the 280x.

I'd honestly try and get an extra £50 from somewhere and get a R9 290, the extra £££ would be worth it for the performance :)

This.

Thanks for the advice guys. saving £50 more for the 290 sounds good, but with my monitor only 1080p and no plans for the future on getting better screen or sli/ crossfire, the 290 seems overkill.

Ill be running it with am EVGA G2 750 gold medal thingy, is this enough power for it, the specs recopmmend a 750watt at least.

I can't comment on AMD as I have a GTX780 but I think you should be fine with a 750 Watt PSU you definetly made the right choice in paying that little bit extra

Yeah a 750 GOLD EVGA unit would be enough for a 290. The recommended 750w requirement is for crap PSU's with sketchy ratings, which are worlds apart from your PSU.
