Hi all,

As the title of this thread says I am issues with Steam and Skype disconnecting all the time and this has only started fairly recently.

Yet my web browsers remain unaffected as with them I always have web connectivity and my ISP's service status checker says our fibre optic connection of which, I get through Virgin Media is perfectly fine.

Are there any ideas for me to try and sort the issue out myself without the need for me to ring Virgin Media.

Could it be a software issue or broadband issue?

On a further note whilst on Skype it says either slow connection of which is not the case as get full download speeds, or no internet connection which is also not the case.

With Steam on the other hand says a similar thing but without the Slow connection warning.

I use the following security software and have been since I built my new computer in January of this year without any issues:

1) Sophos Endpoint and Control.
2) ZoneAlarm Free Firewall.
3) Malwarebytes Free Edition.
4) Peerblock 1.2 (To Block Adverts).
5) Adblock Plus browser plug in for Chrome and Firefox (Same as Peerblock).
6) Rapport browser plug in for Chrome and Firefox.

Any Help or advice would be greatly appreciated, I have such security measures because I want to make sure that my system is running smoothly as possible and as virus free as I can to keep it secure.

Skype I don't use anymore, but Steam I definitely get "disconnects" mostly from chat and timeouts on the store, it's been happening quite recently, I'm also on VM.

In relation to what you're running, I also use MBAM, Peerblock(on and off, depending) and also Adblock +.

I'll be honest though, it seems strange the chat disconnects most(about 85%) of the time occur when the line is totally idle, when I'm in work. I'll RD into my PC to check my legitimate downloads and I'll see the chat windows have gone crazy..

Thats been the same for me yet it also happens during chat as well when talking to friends and I do hope this is sorted soon.

Hotspot shield does technically have a "free" version, but it'll default you to a US server, this doesn't really make much of a difference because you're checking for disconnects, not for the speed/latency.

Worth a shot non the less, if you're not getting disconnects when your information is traveling over the bloody ocean then Virgin have some explaining to do.

Rapport? isnt this the thing that a lot of banks ask you to use? i found it really slows down a lot of things..

Try updating network adapter's drivers. (wireless card etc.) & Firmware on router.

are you connecting to net wirelessly or via cable?

All drivers are up to date as checked them last night, and I cant update the multifunctional device (Router & Modem AIO) as I don't have that facility on the user cp and I am using Ethernet

6) Rapport browser plug in for Chrome and Firefox.

Ditch these and see how you get on.

do you know how to check for errors? it maybe dodgy connection / cable giving you a lot of CRC errors and loss packets.
