Hi,

Currently running my S2 on official 4.1.2 ZSMSA which has been rooted, looks like there is a newer build (XWMS3), however where can I find out what the most recent official release is for the phone?

Also what recommendations are there for Custom roms that are basically vanilla Android?

Many thanks in advance...

All fimwares can be found here: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/

You need to search "I9100". It seems WMS2 is the latest UK firmware, the S3 must contain a few changes specific to other countries.

As for custom ROMs, Slimkat, Cyanogenmod, and other similiar ROMs are usually good to try out.

If you listen to a lot of music, avoid kitkat roms on the s2 as there is a driver bug that means that all music apps lock up randomly. It is hardware related and people are working on it, but there isn't a fix yet.

Slimbean is a thoroughly recommended jellybean rom from my perspective

Dont know where you got that from, the wife has been running SlimKat 4.4.2 for over a month with no problems using PowerAmp.

SlimKat is a very good ROM if you want the new features although the PPI settings are a little small for my liking but thats easy to change by editing the build file. Its based on CM11 but heavily modified, best thing for you to do is try a ROM and see how it feels!

Here's the thread on XDA about the music bug - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2612329

Here is a quote from the summary - "Performing read/write operating on an SD card or external SD card on the Exynos 4210 family of devices will result in what ever app started the operation to hang until the phone is rebooted. This is especially evident in music players"

The Slimkat thread on XDA also has this as a known issue (as does the CM11 thread on which slimkat is based)
