Abysmal Internet and BT are useless

The major annoyance comes when the government subsidise BT to help them extend to the lowly corners of England and yet I am left waiting and waiting for FTTC.

Oh woe is you  You're included in the FTTC rollout, but BT aren't being quick enough for you. Do you know whether your area is actually included in the government subsidy scheme?

If it's that much of a problem, why don't you fund the fibre installation instead?

The sense of entitlement that some people have is astonishing.

Can you explain WHY you think you deserve £100ks being spent just so you can get faster internet? What makes you so special?

Well it's the government saying they want me to have 2 meg by 2016 or whenever ;)

My only bugbear with the above I posted is with the BT estimates and what would be their acceptable operating range being so wide, and how actual speeds never seem to be in line with their estimate.

Personally another meg or two and I'd be happy, I don't need super whizzy fibre, just want enough to be able to use iPlayer and other streaming services without any issues.

Otherwise it's not much of a bother apart from having tp have a bit more forward thinking when pulling down some large files from work (32 Gig for one thing I'll have to leave for next time I visit an office ;) ).

My point was around the fact that the gov are saying one thing, but do not seem to be doing things to achieve what they want (no change there then!).

Whilst many would probably say Devon is the middle of nowhere it's not as if I live in a shack on the moors, just live at the edge of a normal town.

As for the OP, whilst frustrating I wouldn't be too bothered with a few months delay as it's coming, just relax :)

Oh it's not commercially viable, ignoring the fact that soon there will be a significant number of houses here that will off the bat all be under the gov target of 2 meg.

At which point as soon as those properties are built the cabinet that serves them will be upgraded, assuming that there are enough of them to tip it over the threshold. This might be a new cabinet though if there isn't enough capacity on an existing one. Relying on a housing development to bring fibre to you is a dangerous game to play.

BT aren't a charity, people (myself included) would object if they were building out infrastructure for properties that didn't exist yet. If anything the developers should be working with Openreach to ensure the best possible connections are provided.

I'm not relying on it, I'm merely hoping there will be enough interest registered to trigger things, who knows if it'll happen though.

I'm aware BT are not a charity, my point has always been more around the gov agenda for minimum speeds and how they let developers build without making sufficient infrastructure provisions.

It's something my local MP is apparently also grumbling about when I mentioned it so it's not just me whining lol.

Par for the course with BT. I live in a new build estate with very poor ADSL due to distance from the exchange. The exchange is now fibre enabled but my local cabinet isn't and won't be getting upgraded as it's not economically viable. I understand BT aren't a charity but it they who, in the last 4 years, due to utter lack of foresight have connected a number of properties to a small cabinet and the rest of the estate to a much larger one. The small cabinet can never be economically viable for upgrading due to the number of lines (I'm not sure of the exact number but we're still talking dozens). I'm told I'm lucky as the area is in the plans for a government subsidised upgrade.... in 2017. To add insult to injury the larger cabinet is about 70 yards from my house.

That's just the luck of the draw unfortunately. I was recently quoted in excess of £35,000 for a cabinet upgrade - that's a lot of Infinity subscriptions that need to be sold to see a return.

My town has been on the list for a while now. Started off saying May 2013, then went to October 2013, then end of December 2013, then March 2014 now its saying August to October 2014 !! Half the town has virgin, the other doesnt and virgin have never nor will ectend their network. The 2 towns either side have full FTTC and Virgin cable :( I too hate slow broadband speed and when i hopefully buy a house next year it will definatly be in a high speed area lol

DSL stats? Are they these?

That's shockingly bad

For that attenuation you can obtain a reliable connection rate of around 4Mb

Ditch talktalk, grab a DG834GT (if your not already using one) and tune the SNR - should get a stable 4Mbit as above unless there are further problems with the line beyond just the distance.

Judging by the ping you might have some pretty heft interleaving kicked in to keep it stable which might indicate something like damp/rotting somewhere.

*UPDATE*

Work began yesterday on powering the new fibre optic cabinet just down the road to which I am connected.

The cabinet's fibre is complete and they only need to draw mains power in from elsewhere.

Does anybody have any experience in how long this may take?

I'm hopeful that fibre optic will be available to me before the start of May and I can leave AOL and sign up with Plusnet and hopefully get a half decent service

Keep an eye on roadworks.org for when work is being done for the power.
The cab in my village has been in place for a couple of months now but it's not yet active, from watching the roadworks announcments it looks like they had to sort out something with the ducts.
This is a good checker too - http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/ADSLChecker.TelephoneNumberOutput

Doesn't really effect me anyway, they are only doing cabs 1 and 2 in my village, and putting a new one in at the exchange for EO lines. I'm on Cab 3. If they were doing it i'd still be about 3KM away from it instead of 4 which would probably get me up to 6Mb or so from my current 2.5Mb but nothing amazing.
I'm crossing my fingers for FTTDP in a few years. Until then I've got an 8Mb WISP connection that should go up to 20Mb/4Mb when the WISP gets Fibre in a few months. Only problem with them is a crappy usage cap, so I need to keep my DSL for any large downloads.
