Do you flash other drivers over?

Does anyone else here refrain from flashing other drivers who are hogging the outside lane?

I do. Getting caught behind someone dawdling along in the middle/outside lanes absolutely boils my ****. Yet I do absolutely nothing about it, except grumble inwardly. I was flicking through a thread on Pistonheads discussing the same thing earlier, and I think its a peculiar British thing that most people in this country wont seem to signal to others that they are behind held up, either out of politeness, a feeling that it's too aggressive, or merely the fear of antagonising someone.

I'm not talking about sitting right on someone's bumper giving them the good news with continuous full beam. Just a quick flash from a fair distance. So tonight, on my way home from swimming, I thought I'd test whether it actually works at all.

First car I came up behind was a BMW 5 series sitting in the outside lane. Making good progress, but no one inside him and I was gaining on him. I moved out behind him a fair way back (200 metres perhaps), and gave just a quick tap. He duly moved over and I passed, thanking him with hazards.

Second car was a Volvo estate. Outside lane, 65MPH maybe, no one on his inside. Again, quick flash from a fair way back (don't want to antagonise someone who might try braking checking in response). No response. I sat behind him at a good distance for a while and he didn't budge, despite there being no one inside him. I wasn't going to flash a second time and instead undertook giving him a wide berth.

Third car, white Mercedes coupe, outside lane. Again, I checked no one was inside then gave a quick flash. He didn't move over, but instead booted the throttle (I know because of the smokescreen of soot he deposited over me) and sped up, but stayed in the outside. I still count this one as a win though; he didn't move over, but he sped up so the end result was he was no longer holding me up :p

So anyone else ever bother doing it? Or do you think it's too aggressive? I certainly wouldn't flash someone more than once, nor would I get close. Nor would I do it if they were clearly passing someone, so it's no good doing it in rush hour traffic. I just wonder if more people were inclined to give others a signal that they were being held up, there'd be less lane hogging. Although being pessimistic, I guess it's more likely that we'd end up with people getting annoyed at the indecency of someone wanting to go faster than them and might just end up braking to intentionally annoy them further.

If I'm making progress in the outside lane and someone is holding me up when they could move over (and there is space to do so..), then sure. I'd say that 70% of the time it works.

I flash but only if it's someone really oblivious, think I've done it maybe 2 or 3 times over the years. There's a big thread on pistonheads recently too.

It's just to let them know you're there, don't see anything wrong with it.

I'll do it, but only if i've sat behind (at a reasonable distance) for a while and there are big, obvious gaps or next to no traffic.

Sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. To be honest you can usually spot the oblivious drivers who just won't understand what's going on / don't even notice. Get the odd reaction like you did the last time too, but end result is you still get to make the progress you wanted anyway!

I wouldn't personally mind if it happened to me - would just shift over asap

Of course, I thought that kind of thing came naturally with the roundel. Got to be honest, it never works, those kind of people are oblivious to everything.

I do it quite a bit - normally put the right indicator on, position myself in the far right of the lane and give a couple of flashes. I'd say it works around 70% of the time, and if it doesn't I'll just pass on the inside. I often get a few angry flashes in return but by that time I'm well past them.

I generally indicate right, as it's very sarcastic with out the aggressiveness of flashing or beeping.

That said, its ineffective. But it does provide amusement to me to know the some people are utterly oblivious... And it also let's me know to give them a wide berth .

Im too old and board to flash and tailgate these days.

Usually flash if I've been held up by them for a while, then end up undertaking as they're usually oblivious/not taking the hint.

The kind of driver who would respond well to being flashed at would have already seen you coming in the rear view mirror and moved over anyway. Or at least that's what I do.

I have to admit that people are slightly unaware of how they should be driving. Prime examples include where the M25 has been widened to 4 lanes. Lanes 1-3 can be devoid of people yet they've decided that the outside lane is their only lane for the whole journey. Get's rather grating when I have to undertake them whilst in the inside lane with 2 empty in the middle!

For you to come across three people practising the art of outside lane hogging today is an achievement on its own! To be honest when I see a GT86 coming up behind me I'll try and make delay his progress! :P

In all seriousness I don't spend a great deal of time on the motorway but I'll sit behind someone for maybe a quarter of a mile, at a safe distance, and if they've not figured it out by then a quick tap on the flash. Normally they move across politely enough. Not sure if they ever learn, mind.

Yeah, I tend to give a quick flash, most of the time people seem to be unaware there's a car coming from behind. If they don't move, as long as it's safe I just undertake and move on.

Occasionally and only if I'm being held up and there's space for them to move over on the left. Also if someone does move over and they're going to get held up by the slower car in their lane I don't edge past them at 1mph faster, I get past them more quickly.

On the other hand if it's a nearly empty motorway and some prat is in the outside lane and I'm in the inside lane, I'll just drive straight on and ignore them. If I'm in the middle lane though due to traffic or there's only two lanes it's a little close for comfort so I'll refrain from passing on the left unless they're then refusing to move over.. in which case I won't hang around in their blind spot..

I pass aggressively on the inside, beeping the horn and gesticulating as I pass them. I then pull into lane three and brake test them before speeding off with my four way flashers on.

At least that's what I feel like doing sometimes.

I have recently started flashing my headlamps at people who haven't moved over (only if they themselves are not being held up and the left lane is empty).

I have also undertaken people who refuse to pull over. Unless there is congestion, it is impossible to be undertaken if you are using proper lane discipline.

It really isnt. Poor lane discipline is very common around here, to the extent that to find people correctly keeping left is the exception rather than the rule. I come across lane hogging every single morning and evening on the A2 and M25.

I personally don't flash, however if someone is pooling at 65 in the outside I will go into the middle lane/inside and go the speed limit thus overtaking them (not undertaking as I would be doing the speed limit and usually won't pull back into the outside unless there is slow traffic ahead).

I don't get why so many people get annoyed by passing on the inside, if there's enough space for you to pass there's enough space for them to get out of the way

Because people are morons and hate the idea of anyone getting in front of them . It's funny how the police are always condemning tailgating, undertaking and aggressive driving, but pretty much ignore the cause of 90% of that behaviour, i.e. poor lane discipline. Stamp that out and you'll vastly reduce accidents, but considering the amount of police cars I see in the middle lane on the M25, I don't hold out much hope for anything changing.

I don't flash but usually give it a bit of distance to move over before undertaking.

I moan at my mate who sits in the outside or middle lane most of the time, usually just ask him what is wrong with the inside lane.

I got stuck behind a Fiat 500 today and I moved left coming by her as we braked for the roundabout ahead. Turned out she had her wing mirrors folded in...
