I'm pretty shocked this is actually a 'new' thing these days.... seemingly up until this year kids that that high school were going to racially segregated proms? Trying to organise a school prom which all kids can attend somehow still caused controversy? I thought all this **** was supposed to have ended a few decades ago, obviously not the existence of racist numpties but public authorities allowing segregation to carry on - private or not I can't imagine a school in the UK standing back and allowing a black prom and white prom to be organised amongst students... nor deciding against organising a regular prom themselves due to fears of upsetting some of the local community...

lol, thankfully even in southern America this is pretty rare, but why celebrate a school that has taken up until now to change, surely it would more productive to publicise a list of schools that still maintain these traditions.

Why are American black chicks so damn heavy?

Culture or genes?

Having said that there's a lots of whales out there regardless of colour...

Agree. If anything this school should not be congratulated, but condemned for upholding these bigoted, perverse and backward traditions for so long.

Seems you didn't read the article, the school didn't uphold anything, it just hadn't been hosting a prom at all.

Yeah sorry, I kind of skimmed it.

Still shouldn't have taken this long though. The interracial prom should have been instigated far sooner to prevent the ridiculous private segregated proms that were occurring. What a fantastic way to instill bigoted views in young people.

I agree yeah, it's still bad as obviously it's still a very popular opinion in those parts that they should be separated.

and thus allowing the racially segregated proms to carry on in its place....

Pretty much every other high school in America has a normal regular prom... this one did too - some of these schools stopped those once they were forced to allow black kids to enroll too and proms were then organised privately along racial lines... Its pretty sad that its taken until 2014 and required a bunch of students to sort it out before the school would put on what plenty of other high schools organise already.

Prom? Sorry, had to google that. Can we stick to UK English please? Prom is apparently = ball! (unless it's Last Night of the Proms around September time in the UK). The other one is "baby shower", another US term, something I got invited to but couldn't attend due to work commitments. Apparently a baby shower is an event like a wedding where they get wedding gifts but for the child.

This actually is a prom though. Georgia in America, you see; that's how they roll
