Finding a place to rent in London, nightmare!!!

Big up the Ealing massive! :p

A 2-bed flat on my street was up for £499k a while ago, I swear to God there was a 2-bed up in North Ealing for £600k. It's gone absolutely mental around here. Rental wise, £1600 seems to be the norm in Estate Agent's windows.

You're trolling but I'll bite.. Rents are £1500-1800 because the flats are 'worth' £350-400k. So, needing a 25% deposit, er, do you have a spare £87k I can borrow? Have you tried raising £87k when you're paying £1500pm rent too?

Nope, the wife and I bought our house in the Midlands... Its now fully paid for... And we are 25! 3 bed detached
You just picked to live in an area where prices are moronic.

Always entertaining these threads when you have people from third-world areas like the North discussing rent prices :p

Jeez for £2k PCM you can rent a 6 bed house in a private gated estate up here in the north.

Its all relative - a Romanian might well look at a flat in Liverpool and think 'Jeeze you could get a whole farm for that back in Romania' they might also look at the salaries you can earn in the North of England and be slightly gobsmacked...

To people living and working in London the rest of the UK (or at least the North) might as well be Eastern Europe.

I often look at what I could get outside of London for the price I pay here, and it's nothing short of astonishing.

Then I realise that the money earned outside of London is considerably lower for a comparable job, and that I happen to live in one of the most awesome cities in the world, and it makes it well worth it.

A flat above a chippy springs to mind :p

Hey, I used to live in a flat above a chippy in Edinburgh, can't beat the convenience :p Averaged about £600/month for a two bed place up there, but I daresay that's gone up in the last 5 years.

I now pay £60/month for a 3 bedroom place with a couple of balconies and a nice view. I don't miss UK rent prices :p There's also now a 7/11 underneath me, may or may not be better than a chippy..

Really, are we that much of inbreds that we don't know when we are getting ripped off.

A random example. i know what i would choose.

Looks very handy for getting to the office

Yes, property may be more expensive here but there are many more opportunities.
I had a look on Jobserve for what I do and there was one job within 25 miles of Windermere paying up to £25K.
In London there were 650 jobs, 80 of which were paying £100K+

I'm originally from the north and for what I paid for my house here in London I could have bought a mansion in many parts of Northern England, but I wouldn't have been able to afford to keep that mansion with the jobs that are available.
It's swings and roundabouts, you earn more but pay more to live.

I'm certainly not planning on spending the whole of my life living in London, but for now it does pretty nicely for me.

As people here will probably know Cambridge, how reasonable is it to get a 1 bed in City centre for 800? (a month?)

I'll make my own thread nearer the time (September)

You'll get a 3 bedroom house in ruislip for that sort of money, it's about an hour to get to Victoria though as you'll need to change. Going to be doing that commute shortly :(. At least ruislip is at the end of the central line so you're guarenteed a seat...

As for prices in London. My workmates and I decided to see how much it would cost to live near where we work (Marylebone). £2k a week for a 1 bedroom flat..

*worries that he lives so close to Theopany* :p

West Hampstead is nice but it's a bit of a ball ache to Ruislip. The Met isn't all that frequent and might not serve the bit of Ruislip that you're looking to get to. I'm surprised you're having such a hard time in Ealing. Have you looked around Chiswick? Doesn't take any time at all to Victoria and the Central Line/Piccadilly Line are reasonably close for Ruislip.

Met line is every 5 ish minutes and runs til half 12 (from baker street) most days. And takes 35 minutes.

It's significantly better than the Piccadilly line which usually involves a change at rayners lane.

Somewhere about halfway along the central line may be your best bet though, that makes it about half an hour each way.

We need another London meet, I'll bring a few northerners with me so you can argue about what's worse - a day at t'mill, or paying £££ in rent. :p

I guess I'm glad I live where I do, fairly cheap and as my business model is mail order only I have all the opportunity needed. Everybody wins!

London prices are in the main currently driven by foreign investment. Who's to say if that investment will go elsewhere in 5/10 years. Or maybe London will become like NY, in which case buying a pokey flat at £350k may be a wise long term move.

Windermere is an extreme example, how many jobs are there within say 1hr commute of a place like Woking? My bet is Woking living, 1hr commute each way + the salaries available to you (guess £70k but you could train it into C.London) will see you a damn sight better off each month than London living, a 30min tube commute and £100k.
