I have never tried this and assume it would be ridiculously hard to make any money, I started a wordpress blog for my own ramblings and see that you can add ads. I am sure there are a lot of tricks going on, i.e people trying to generate visitors to their site, bots etc. Which brings me to the point, how ads companies know if you had a bot or not. I know in the mobile games market for example that people use all kinds of tricks such as bots to download and buy their games and adding comments...other tricks as well.

So does anyone here actually make any money in ads from their site/blog?

I have a landing page on a domain that has made £2.36 in the last 5 years

I'm planning on retiring in the year next 4.5 billion years, just before the sun engulfs our planet after i've invested heavily in sun tan lotion.

I don't think you're likely to make money from a blog of your ramblings unless you're either famous or have exceedingly good ramblings that others like to link to etc...

You might well get money from a blog about a particular area, interest, hobby etc... if you can get the traffic... I.e. you're a pastry chef, you create a regularly updated blog, youtube channel etc.. showing you making stuff... you include a few links, ads for pastry chef supplies inc, specialist pastry chef ingredients ltd - buy from here not the supermarket because the sugar is of the highest...blah blah blah....

I make quite a lot of money from adsense on my forum. ~£500 PCM.

As to how they detect bots from what I know they have a set range of activity they expect from sites (ie impression to click ratio) if your account deviates from the norms they take a harder look at your account. They also log IPs of who clicks on the ads. I also suspect they occasionally throw out an ad completely unrelated to the normal viewing pattern to see if a click appears.

The most obvious one I've seen to detect bots is low impressions and a high click through rate.

I imagine there's 100s of other things they do.

Not bad, I bet you are looking forward to declaring all that income tomorrow on self assessment ? (serious question btw :))

It's all done under a limited company so I pay 20%(on what's not reinvested) if I were to add it to my personal it would push me into the 40% bracket so I work out slightly better off by using a limited.

Still painful to watch that money go lol.

Aren't you better uploading a vid to youtube of something funny / injury related? A mate of mine has got ~£500 from a video he uploaded of him falling off a bike from advertising. Its had about 200k views. He has split the money with the guy who recorded him.

Some tv show, red tube mayebe or something like that emailed him asking if they could buy the rights for a grand - they declined

How on earth is there so much money sloshing about, I know it advertising for businesses but there must be 10s or 100s of thousands of videos on youtube with over 200k views - 200k just for a reference. We must be talking billions here.

Who actually clicks on the ads anyway, I never click ads, even on youtube you can skip after 5 seconds and never even see who the ad is from, maybe there is enough subliminal there for it to register in our minds?

There is something that doesn't seem to fit here though, a money tree somewhere with a never ending supply of money for 5 second clips that nobody ever clicks and 500PCM for one video for over 200k views and that is just youtube.

So what must say PSY make, he has over 2 billion views and there are loads of videos over 100s of millions of views.

Don't you think that the number just can't possibly add up here, there just can't be that much money floating about, adverting agencies or not. I don't get it.

How do you think googles so rich? Lol

Now think the share they take from adsense is about 32% and YouTube I think they take 45%.

The company I work for has a monthly online advertising budget of £20,000. They're a small fish in a pond of much bigger richer fishes.

I don't think it was that site...

The popular youtube channels make hundreds of thousands a year. A few are probably in the 7 figs.

But think of how much advertisers pay to proper TV channels and how much TV personalities are paid. The number of viewers is actually quite close on some youtube videos so it makes sense.

lol. just checked that site, nope! cant remember the name but its basically a tv show that plays youtube / other internet content

Every once in a while an advert will catch my attention and I will click on it.

Works very well sometimes, e.g. when I had been looking for an external hard drive and an advert appeared linking to a site which had one on offer - clicked the advert, took me to the site and I bought it cheaper. Advertising does work

Thinking of Rude Tube ^^?

My old (Not particularly popular) forum made around £10 per month, a measly amount but enough to pay for hosting of a forum. I think the trick is to be really targeted, a general forum will have general adverts, which people are much less likely to click. My forum was about gaming, and so Google's automated system quickly tailored the adverts to games, at which point the revenue shot up from the low pennies to the £10 mark, despite the forum only having 30-40 posts per day :)

As most have said though, if you want to make an income from it, I think you need to be really focused, and maybe be doing it as a profession, such as the many web developers out there who run blogs to share their work.
