If you bother to read the details the "segregated" proms are privately done by the parents. The state of Georgia has nothing to do with it. It's no different than living in the suburbs to avoid blacks. Private self-segregation. Nothing wrong with it.

That would make a novel plot for a sci-fi film. A benevolent but rather detached alien civilisation helps humanity by creating an enemy that humans can unify against. Robots, probably something semi-organic created specifically to be frightening and repulsive to humans.
