Is LotRO any good, without paying the subscription? I am a massive mmo noob (never played any mmo games before) so how does this compare to singleplayer rpgs like Skyrim or maybe the Witcher 2?

Not really, although it's free to download, it's very much Pay to Play in terms of abilities/quests/mounts etc.

Shame really, I really did enjoy the game.

Yes the game is playable as FTP .As with all games it is designed as a tester for people to see if they enjoy it.Yes if you subscribe just for one month a host af benefits are opened up permanentley on the account. If you enjoy it sub for a month £8 and unlock all the benefits and see how the game feels for you.if you are enjoying it then look out for offers on the expansion packs etc
I think i saw the quad pack for £30 recently.

Without paying a penny you will get to level 20 ish then start running out of things to do.

not really from what i remember. You get lone lands as part of free to play, that will take you up to 30 and tbh by then you will have enough points to buy another area.

Realistically you only get points by grinding the content you already have access to... and I do mean GRIND. That and that each region is a seperate quest pack means that to unlock everything will either take a very very long time, or cost a fair bit of money.

I might as well give it a shot then! I've just watched The Hobbit in preparation for watching The Hobbit 2 on dvd on Tuesday and I might finally be getting into LotR (help :( )

Was only really pointing out that its easy to get to 30, and you can probably afford 1 addon area by then. By then you can determine if you want to keep playing the game or not.

Grinding is generally part of any mmo, and even when you have the areas..you still need to grind out the deeds if you want the skills.

In terms of cost to play, one month sub unlocks you quite a bit of stuff. and you can keep your eye's open for deals on expansions. You used to also be able to pickup things like the mithril edition for a tenner, that gave you a few areas and a mount plus some points to spend... in some cases it used to mark your account as subbed for a short period, so you could unlock stuff without actually subbing. No idea if mithril is still available though.
