Peaches Geldoff Dead

Why what? Do you have multi-page threads every time a journalist dies?

You claimed that it didn't deserve coverage by serious media. I responded that she contributed to serious media through columns. She has a much bigger public profile than most journalists, and therefore having been covered by both tabloid and serious media throughout her career, it is only understandable that both have picked up on her death.

You've got to be pretty slow not to realise that...

Furthermore, there's no correlation between a multi-page thread on an internet forum and a story being/not being covered by serious media. But good luck with peddling your faux, transparent outrage! :)

Don't go into the MH370 thread then... more surmising and more death

I shall presume in THAT thread people are surmising that the cause of deaths are due to the plane plummeting to earth?

There are different reasons a 25 year old girl could 'just die', calling her a 'clapped out druggie' (to paraphrase a deleted comment on here) is disgusting.

I personally think this is an outmoded and horribly old-fashioned why of thinking and needs rethinking. No ones above criticism just because they're dead

It's not outmoded and not old fashioned at all, it's called being a decent human being - something which perhaps you're not familiar with, however for most this is normal behaviour.

No one is saying that the deceased are beyond recrimination, they absolutely are not, nor are their actions. However, there is a time and place, and irrespective of your views on whoever they are, be it Bob Crow, Thatcher or even Peaches biting your tongue before saying something vitriolic is absolutely the right thing to do.

I'm not saying we should all cry and join in mass hysteria, I don't particularly care much for Peaches, however, I am sad for the hole in people's lives she has left behind.

Just try to exercise a bit of common sense please - if you're able to.

We're not talking about no criticism, we're talking about being respectful and having common decency. As mentioned there can still be discussion, it's about how the views are being put across which is the important thing. As per previous threads around certain controversial characters, we've not said you can't criticize these people, it's just that the views you hold and want to put across need to be respectful.

Just out of curiosity... does that mean no jokes of the dead, ever?

I haven't and don't want to post a joke (I had no idea of this monday song etc... [my poor connection with music there] and its not overly funny anyway). Its not really a discussion for this thread, but saying "don't speak ill of the dead" whilst there are people on OCUK wishing other celebs were dead and speaking ill of them (and thats okay) seems very odd.

I get the common decency thing, but that should go both ways - but then we wouldn't have any jokes - as someone is always the butt of a joke (in modern jokes anyway)

There's a time and a place around jokes, straight after someones death is very crass isn't it? Which is what we're trying to steer clear from.

There were/are lots of different theories from terrorism to captain suicide, to aliens...

I agree, it is... but it is completely acceptable to surmise that she died of drugs given her past use of substances. Obviously, the news this morning that no drugs were found at the property reduces its likelihood dramatically.

Got no idea who she is or why she is famous and I'm not going to say rip because I don't know her. Just someone else who's died to me and nothing else.

And yet you still felt had to post? Ironic.

PS: If you don't know who Bob Geldoff is then lol..

But jokes before they are dead and wishing they were dead is okay and not considered crass?

Not going to argue the point further... Said what I had to say. I don't even want to make a joke, it is a sad day when any young mum of two dies, but if you could update the title when the mods feel it is okay to make jokes in threads, that would be great (flippant comment is deliberately flippant and rhetorical)

Really? I've barely heard of her in the last decade, i think this is getting more coverage for who her dad is rather then who she is herself. Pretty much how she went through life as well

+1

Like all 'celebrities' their writing is filtered through a real journo and any books are ghost written.

Lets be honest, when your dad is Bob Geldoff, it's hard to not be known purely for that association no matter how talented and nice a person you may be. That's not her fault though.

No, those types of comments are also crass and not needed - you need to remember that this forum is one of the most active in the UK. Moderating this forum is a challenge and invariably things slip through the net. This is why we give you the ability to RTM (Report To Moderator) button. So if you see anything which you believe should be actioned, if you press this button it flags it up to us to review.

RIP. Really sorry to hear this, only a year older than myself and with 2 kids + her father left behind, impossible to imagine.

Because this news is all over the internet and all over the news. Lots of people died yesterday what makes this non celebrity death any different?

Of course I know who Bob Geldolf is, what's that got to do with anything? I couldn't name/don't know who his other kids are either.

She was a celebrity. Anyway, the "but lots of people died today what makes this so special" is just something repeated by people with the IQ of an apricot. She was famous to an extent, was in the public eye, and thus the media covers it. It's that simple.

And you couldn't make the link? Jesus...

Maybe go and sit down and have a cup of tea. Quite a touchy chap aren't you?

I think some people just find it a bit sad that the public gets so worked up when someone 'famous' dies because of our pathetic celebrity culture. She wasn't exactly going to cure cancer or anything so for her death to get so much attention over all the other kind, decent, caring people who have sadly died isn't very logical. Shouldn't really expect the general public to be logical though.

It's undoubtedly sad but no more so than deaths in non-celebrity families but if people here were really fond of Peaches and her work then fair enough.

Don't mistake me pointing out the lack of knouse of some random on an internet forum, for me being genuinely annoyed. Two very different things I assure you. :)

Ahh yes, so we should only be made aware or someones death when they have the potential to "cure cancer", or are considered "decent, kind and caring" people. Another classic. :D
