Does anyone have any reasoning as to why there are 2 different 880M cards? Apart from the VRAM is there any difference and what is the performance differences between the 2 cards?

I believe its the same chip with the same memory bandwidth - just with extra total memory.

So its basically a GTX 770 with lower clockspeeds and a lot of video memory. Unless you are doing a lot of very high resolution image editing I don't see how the extra 4GB will be very useful.

As for why they have done it, you could ask the same question about why they have overclocked the 780M and called it the 880M. They want something they can market to people, regardless of whether it is actually any better than the previous version.

You also have AMD to blame for renaming their HD7970M AGAIN. Nvidia already had the fastest mobile GPU so like you say they just needed something new to market to people.

Oh absolutely, they are all at it.

I reckon the PC/laptop makers are frustrated that the tech in their machines isn't moving forward as quickly as smartphone/tablet hardware - so they feel the need to have "new" parts every year. Whether they are actually new parts or not doesn't seem to matter.

It is a shame that its a little stagnant at the minute. I think the focus went away from the laptop/mobile GPU for a while as the tablets became huge. Then people realised you could only play angry birds or PvZ.

I don't know, I am seriously enjoying playing BF2 on my Toshiba Encore. :p
