Why isn't Maria Miller in jail?

Because she's an MP. Obviously. If you're poor and defraud HM Treasury out of £45k just apologise and offer to pay it back. I'm sure the judge will accept it.

Wasn't it decided that it was actually £5800 not £45k because the logic used to ascertain £45k was somewhat daft?

I bet if it were average joe then it would have been £45k :D

Maybe not jail but she needs to be out of a job in my opinion. Supposed to be a public servant not self servant :(

A message needs to be sent were fed up of expenses fraud.

No.

IPSA said she should pay back the £45,000 a committee of MPs than decided she only had to pay back the £5800

Basically the MPs marked their own homework.

She needs to be a labour mp.... honestly 90% of the MP's 'convicted' and shown on the news/in papers for fraud appear to be labour, yet the conservatives and lib dems are as bad if not worse....

At the very least she needed to be fired but this is a conservative so basically all the rich cronies will say she's done nothing wrong as they're all doing the same... (obviously opinion not factually accurate)

Still think the MP's get too much for in many cases sod all work, I can't claim back a home mortgage against my work earnings and taxes....

You might want to look at the makeup of the Standards committee before you make this a party political thing. ;)

Add to that their upcoming pay rise of 11% (£7,600) and we have a right bargain for our government.

Pigs at the trough the lot of them.

Conservatives just seem to be worse in my area (conservative stranglehold)

Don't even mention that one... my Mum hasn't had a 'real' pay rise for years (teaching assistant) and they get a pay rise around half her earnings.... same goes for nurses etc too

Most of the MPs are still doing what she has done, that is why most of them are not condemning this obvious case of fraud because they are still committing fraud like this right now, money they are stealing from you and me.

That sounds like you're saying she's done nothing wrong... are you?

sounds like he is just suggesting nothing can be done until it happens and he would like this.

we all know if it were a regular joe they would have been arrested the instant the DWP or whoever find out...

Someone was in the news for stealing 50k in benefits recently right?
I think she got a pathetic prison sentence and only had to pay back a fraction but an MP should be made an example of surely because what they do in their position of trust is far worse

The vast majority of them are millionaires anyway so really when these people have so much wealth is there a reason why they can't pay their own way rather than the taxpayer foot the bill?
