Why isn't Maria Miller in jail?

Indeed, and actually getting a conviction isn't trivial. Proving dishonesty offences can be particularly difficult sometimes.

They managed it with a few MPs recently - Elliot Morley, Dennis McShane were two prominent Labour MPs who went to chokey over their expenses. There was also a Tory peer as well, but can't remember his name.

You have to prove intent, and the independent commission could find no evidence if deliberate fraud so clearly nothing will happen as there is insufficient evidence!

I'm not saying it's not possible, just that it's not trivial either.

Stop being accurate, this is the OcUK lynch mob here.

But yes, technically she hasn't committed any criminal offence, just been very clever with her expenses claims. My personal beef is not with her, but the committee which decided to reduce the pay-back to a tenth of what she overcharged. I would also guess that this resignation was timed to exactly coincide with Cameron's second declaration of support. At the same time, Cameron would have told her that the support would expire in forty-eight hours if she didn't go.

If I was "clever" with my expenses to the tune of £45k I would be up on charges.

Add to that their upcoming pay rise of 11% (£7,600) and we have a right bargain for our government.

Pigs at the trough the lot of them.

The one awarded by an independent body you mean?

People complain about MPs handling their own pay and demand an independent body is set up to oversee it. People then complain when said independent body advise a pay rise. Logical.

Single mother receives £52,000 in error from council and is hounded by the police to recover the money and has the ramifications of it to follow as well, MP resigns and ordered to repay £5,800 out of the £40,000 odd, and that's that.

Brush it it under the carpet and get back to those benefit scroungers.

Jail is for the little people.

Pretty much.

A politician scams £50k, slap on the wrist, loses job.
A bankers scams millions, slap on the wrist, loses job.
Joe down the street living on £80pw claims benefits he's not entitled to, gets thrown in jail, criminal record, life ruined but we've got to make an example of him.

We can't have those in power being seen as corrupt can we? the sheep might revolt.

Really ****es me off.

she should be thrown out of parliament not just able to resign being a minister. If I accidentally or otherwise claimed £45k on expenses im pretty sure I'd get the sack

Dont forget the prime minister publicly backed her, so shouldnt he now resign for lacking judgement and being incompetent

That would depend entirely on how you were clever. If your company allowed whatever you were doing, you would not have broken the law (unless you broke other laws). Miller did not break the law, she just stretched the rules as far as they would go. The couple of MPs who went to prison did break the law. Claiming a mortgage on a property you own but which your parents live in is stretching the rules. Claiming a mortgage you have paid off is fraud.

Indeed.

This sheep is getting rather tired of the ruling elite urinating on his head and telling him it's raining.

Stop bringing sensible facts into this lynch mob

The independent authority found mistakes not fraudulent activities to the tune of £54,000 which was then reduced via peer review to £5,800.

That's quite a mistake to make. One that seems to have been repeated by a number of our MPs. So ok, I can accept they're not criminal but then surely it means they are utterly inept and incompetent?

Inept and incompetent? Only the ones that broke the law.

Those that have stretched and bent the rules, fashioning them to their own positive outcomes, are incorrigible and morally reprehensible, but not inept. Quite the opposite.

It's not when you look at the reason for the disagreement. The original body said she over claimed on the basis of the original purchase value of the property in the 90s, the peer review concluded she was entitled to claim expenses based on the actual mortgage value.

Yep. Exceptionally adept at making sure that they don't actually have to live using their ever-inflating wages like the rest of us. Just think how much these cretins are shoving away in hedge funds and generally unattainable savings accounts per year -- made possible solely by the fact that they're living directly out of taxpayers' pockets.

Some of them charge more in personal expenses a year than a childless couple with two cars and a mortgage may EARN. That's disgusting.
