Beyond the veil: What happened after Rebekah Dawson refused to take her niqab off in court

I find the veil to be offensive. I was going to work and ran in to a young woman (well she looked young but couldn't realy tell) in a full covering and her older husband. I trolled the guy by telling him that he should cover up because I can see his skin. He didn't know what to say and thought i was going to hit him.

What does it for me is this - There is the EDL and there are muslim extremists. Both are extremists and both are in opposition.

Let us call the muslim extremists ME for this example.

The ME go and see our troops coming home and call the murders and other general unacceptable behavior. Our police do our best to completely protect them from the innocent public and the troops (who did nothing; it must take some cahones to come back without some of your friends due to IED's etc and then have to take that abuse; I couldn't).

Yet every time the EDL have a march the police do their best to stop it, stop their freedom of expression.

What does this say to the country?

2 guys cut off a soldiers head and it turns out they were students of the islamic hate preacher whos name I have forgotten; he is still living in the UK on full benefits allowed to preach his hate because we are too scared of offending him. Not scared of offending britains though (EDL members).

I cannot stand the EDL and I cannot stand radical muslim extremists, and I am not alone - but it seems the EDL are not allowed but the latter can do whatever they like.

The country is going bad - statistics say something like the average sharia household had 7 kids - the average EDL and general public have 2 kids - at one point there will be far more sharia extremists than us. What happens then?

Just to point out my statement is no way in fact as I CBA to research it properly with regards to figures!

That is just a moronic thing to say to someone. Congratulations, people like you are the reason they hate us!

I actually agree with Arknor on some of his comments. Also i dont know about England but i would presume its similar to Ireland, Christian Country with Christian leaders. 1000's of years of christian history, i cannot see the people of Ireland or this country implementing Sharia law without an uprising.

Having sharia law for muslims is fine but try to enforce this on Christian people and your gonna get a whole lot of trouble. Infact trying to enforce it on anybody that does not want it and your going to get trouble, it will never happen in Eire i can tell you that.

It's funny how they don't tend to settle in Cornwall either - probably realised by now that their funny business would not be tolerated and it would lead to them being buried in a big field somewhere.

I thought it was funny at the time. End of day he wanted to live in london so has to put up with people like me moaning at him. I wouldn't bother speaking to the wife about it especially in front of the husband because of course she will just say that she likes covering up like that.

I don't know what else to say in opposition to something that i don't like. While most british are too scared to say anything too people, I don't mind. I said to this foreign couple on the train if they would mind speaking in english and the daughter got realy angry at me. Starting speaking in london accent and telling me that i had no right to say it, getting in my face. I just explained that i was sick of hearing the mumble mubmle umble on the way too work and the way home from work. There was other people in the train that held the girl back saying it was not worth it. I was calm throughout and they could speak English quite well as well. I would have thought she would have just said no and carried on. But they took it as attack on their race or something. So i ended up just moving away from them.

Why don't you just say nothing?

It might seem a bit cowardly saying nothing but voicing your concerns here but you can't just go being offensive to strangers because you don't agree with them or their customs on the street.

Why the **** did you ask a family to speak to each other in English? Who do you think you are, exactly?

What kind of freak are you?

Who gives you the right to dictate what languages people can speak in private?

The issue is a muslim looks at a UK citizen and either wants them dead, or to trample all over their laws/rights etc,. That is extremism.

I bet even the BNP don't want to kill every muslim in this country, they just want them out of the country, that is a big difference.

yet muslims are tolerated, and not just tolerated I might add/

You are the hero London deserves, but not the one it needs right now.

I'm white British, and some of the nicest people I know are muslim/islamic.

There are scum in all races and religions; some use their religion to hate, some use their upbringing, some just do it for kicks...etc. Doesn't mean everyone is the same though thankfully. Worth remembering is that.

When did we last have some fundamentalist nutjob christian in this country go and kill someone in the name of their religion?

Now when did we last have a fundamentalist nutjob muslim do it? Now how many of those instances have we had in the last ten years?

That's why there's the difference.

This.

Show me a sect of fundamentalist Christians who believe you should kill non-believers. To my knowledge there aren't any. The most extreme groups exist in America, and they simply preach that everybody is going to hell. That's about as extreme as it gets.

Compare that to the famous "kill the infidels" verse. Even if moderates consider that a twisted interpretation, the fact is that some Muslims have taken up this cause.

I was not just walking around telling people to speak english was I. i just had been working late due to a major problem and fed up and sitting quietly on the train when people came in and sat right behind in relatively empty train as it was about 9pm and started rambling in some language. So i said without thinking sorry would you mind speaking in english.

In SA where they have 13 official languages it is considered rude to speak in another language with people near by that don't speak in that language. People still do it of course but it is still considered rude. But not in london every must just shut up and put up.

It was quite bad where i live during the olympics in that regard as i live right near the park and i was all touristed out by the time i commented on people not speaking english. Now i always try and take headphones but don't always manage. The amount of times people speak another language around without me saying anything is quite significant, it happens nearly every day.

I think it is not that i should not care what other people do and say around me. I think it is that people should have consideration for people around them. To me they are making people feel uncomfortable and don't care about anyone but themselves.

No one has pandered to a minority in this case, as was explicitly described, if the need to testify arose then the veil would be required to be removed. Which is perfectly reasonable.

I agree 100% with this.

This. Majority of my very good friends are Muslims. Very welcoming and sociable people in my experience. I've also visited a Mosque on a number of occasions and I've never met a 'bad' Muslim yet.

Why should they need to speak English? It isn't a requirement by law, if you feel uncomfortable then that's your problem or do you just want to listen to what they are saying? Move seat or listen to music, it's as simple as that.

What if the laws are based on religion?

Then we'd be living in a theocracy. Although we have a state sponsored church and 26 seats in the House of Lords reserved for members of the church, we are not a theocracy. Ironically, we are more secular than the US which has church/state separation.

We still have some laws based on Christian dogma though, Sunday trading hours for example. Changes to abortion rules are also heavily doctored to appease Catholics. We also base our court system on religion, asking people to swear on the Holy Bible (or religious book of their choice).
