End of Windows XP support spells trouble for some

Not to sure where the problem is really, very sad to see support end for the great old OS.

Moving on, anyone who has come up through the ranks realizes HD's and Windows Dies....Keep data outside of windows and backed up.
Personally I don't use windows update anyway (service packs yes) for me it breaks to much. I question the value of any Antivirus as every PC I've had to fix virus and malware problems had an AV !

Just Ghost the OS regularly and use a current independent Browser and something like Malwarebytes and C Cleaner but more importantly common sense on the internet and any of the windows OS's will be fine.

Always Linux for free, bottom line no OS or even hardware lasts forever so eventually you will have to change something.

Your going to have to upgrade sooner or later anyway? look hard enough you could probably pick up a cheap base unit with a half decent dual core and a board that can max out on 8GB RAM that will easily run Windows 7

Reputable seller? I have seen loads of sellers with good feedback and reviews selling for £30-£40 for a Windows 7 Pro x64 COA and Product Key

My brother picked up 2GB ram from a well known bay site,we upgraded my mums XP to Win7 (old P4 Dell PC)for under tenner(we had a retail Win7 already).

Hardware wise not going to cost you much, just need to know where to look online.

Not sure why I'm getting all the hate I've not said that MS should carry on XP support or that I'm ****ed that they are dropping it. All I did was share my current situation, I wouldn't be upgrading if MS were still going to support the OS but will be in the next week or so because they aren't. Regardless of whether it costs me £50 or £200 it's still money I would rather not spend as it gains me nothing the only benefit is a supported OS my PC will continue to do exactly the same things it does now.

The only thing I've taken objection to was someone who said there was 'no excuse/reason' for any home computer user to still be on XP when really there are plenty and the simple one of cost is the most obvious.

Microsoft's decision simply means that the cost of the upgrade is worth it compared to the alternative but until 24hrs ago that really wasn't the case!

It's not hate, we are giving you options, end of the day you have to expect any OS to end suppport sooner or later,it's not like you have not had a very good run on XP.

Microsoft's revenue generating campaign has worked on you.

Sadly it has, although I'm on the look out for a second hand license so at least the money won't go to them! I can't complain I've had a good long life on XP and my legit license was a freebie when I was a student so maybe it's about time they got some money out of me....

Why don't the casual web-browsing and typing users move over to something like Mint?

It's free, it's supported, it's updated. I moved my Mum over from Vista and it runs much better.

Ignoring the security aspect. XP is such a clunk to use compared to Windows 7/8

Is it really? I don't see it from a purely end user experience install software for desired job click go how does windows 7 make this any easier? My tinkering days are long behind me if it works I'm happy!

Would love this option but unfortunately some of the software I use is pretty much windows/osx only.

"I am worried about security threats, but I'd rather have my identity stolen than put up with Windows 8,"

Brilliant :D

Windows 8, the first MS operating system that made me go out and buy a Mac

Government does what Government wants. Nothing you can do about it. Plus it didn't stop them years ago when it wasn't obsolete.

My point is this has pretty much nothing to do with Windows 8 whatsoever and yet look at the general theme of the commentary.

Businesses find themselves on the wrong side of XP support lifecycle. "Because Windows 8."

Lol you could not pay me to buy a Mac unless it's a rain coat,Linux over Mac any day.

a1ex2001 you could run XP in offline mode and dual boot it with Linux so for online activity(browsing, downloading ,emails etc) use Linux then use XP offline for your software?

There's plenty of free Linux distros that will install with XP so you can dual boot.

Not exactly a straight forward way of doing things, I don't mind upgrading the kit I've got on the way is apparently up to 140% faster in multi threaded applications so that should be a nice bonus!

I see microsoft have the revenue earning machine in top gear with this.
Updates and MS SE still working but the stupid messages telling you to get Windows 8.1 and a new PC are a bit much.

SE permanently in RED is a tactic used by internet low lives to scare folks out of cash.

I have plenty of PC's running 7 and 8 so it isn't a big deal for me.
One PC remains on XP for legacy reasons and shall remain so
until the earth stop's spinning.

I can see folks being scared by Microsofts tactics and falling prey to the likes of the Purple Shirts.
Or worse EBAY sellers.
