End of Windows XP support spells trouble for some

Didn't use Vista or Me then?

Me was ok really, I think people forget how bad 95 and 98 were really :D

Vista was not liked because it was a resource hog, but really it was ok, after all that's what windows 7 is...Vista with a trim and polish.

Windows 8 was for me a problem as a long time windows user for not even being able to turn it off or do basic things without a relearn, sad because underneath it's quite quick and efficient.
Microsoft would not have failed if it simply gave an option of a classic start and view etc on any of their new products but their arrogance back fired.

There was nothing wrong with Vista, the problem was OEMs installing it on hardware that was barely XP compliant.

Vista and 7 are largely the same bar the interface, the only reason it seems faster is because the base line of hardware had increased when 7 came out.

The problem was, they didn't explain how to do anything with Windows 8 when it came out, rather than the interface itself.

Right, but those are all Microsoft problems - they dropped the requirements for a "Vista Capable" sticker because Intel pressured them into it (it was about the suitability of their onboard video IIRC) and Microsoft didn't tell them to go and do one. The same with Windows 8 - it launching with absolutely no guidance about how to use it is 100% Microsoft's fault.

Windows 3.11 to Windows XP was 8 years. XP is now 13 years old, take it out back and shoot it already.

Running XP x64 on both this machine and my server/media store, don't plan on changing it anytime soon :-)
Got Windows 7 x64 Ultimate on my laptop and bloody hate it, I'll leave XP when I don't have a choice

I've just installed Windows XP 32bit after installing a new a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 770 graphics card. I went online and it installed 135 updates after the 7th deadline, so nothing has changed yet.

In 2012 nobody knew about search engines. ¬¬
Sure but if you have been driving for 20 years and you picked up a new car and it had no pedals what would you say ?

Fantastic solid OS(based on server 2003), like you it's staying, Right click search and no bs of taking ownership of files to do anything etc. I think many just want a lightweight OS with a good file manager and networking capabilities. Like many I use win 7 and 8 also but hand on heart they offer nothing faster or better that I've come across except DX11 for newer games.

You know they did a special windows XP for the military don't you ?...may be a little embarrassing due to what I could only imagine was a lot of money MS screwed them for if they also dropped support for that :D

Give it a few months and MS will be giving free upgrades to all, or reintroducing support for XP, If they had any intelligence they would bring out a new XP even if it was a re shelled win8 :D

Old updates you can get but no support for new updates from Microsoft,XP has come to its end, also sounds like you are a gamer so don't know why you would not be using a more modern OS,I mean you can afford a GTX 770 but not a more modern OS then XP which is more or less dead?

For the record I'm a gamer too and would never go back to XP even if you paid me.

What I thought is that M$ weren't supplying any security/software updates which that say.

It means you should take action. After April 8, 2014, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or technical support for Windows XP. Security updates patch vulnerabilities that may be exploited by malware and help keep users and their data safer. PCs running Windows XP after April 8, 2014, should not be considered to be protected, and it is important that you migrate to a current supported operating system – such as Windows 8.1 – so you can receive regular security updates to protect their computer from malicious attacks.

But there are loads in Add/Remove.

Is it really? I don't see it from a purely end user experience install software for desired job click go how does windows 7 make this any easier? My tinkering days are long behind me if it works I'm happy!

No window snapping
No winkey + number shortcuts
No winkey + arrow to move windows
No taskbar hover options
No taskbar icon right click options
No snipping tool

These are all end user experience things that make 7/8 great to use.

It's a pain to use XP after you're used to using 7/8. Reduces productivity.

No DX10,11 etc on XP ,GTX 770 is going to waste gaming wise.
